On the third of this month I purchased a very nice Model 29-3 3" from a local dealer. Gun is in nice condition and used very little. It is Magnaported and that helped with the price. Paid $675.00 OTD. I've been enjoying the 44 very much but I've been shooting cast bullets in it and now it's time to clean. Notice a lot of crude in the ports. What is the method that would work best in cleaning them?
The ports do work with less muzzle flip and back thrust with heavier loads. This is becoming my favorite 44, it makes for a great packing-woods gun.

I use a nylon brush with solvent, a modified qtip and wooden tooth pick.

A growing number of big bore snubbies here, but nothing ported. So with a clear slate(blank mind) was wondering if one of those dental pic thingies that spritz to clean, but loaded with...say WD40 or such...bought used as in CHEAP..LOL. implements, tips, for cleaning the .17 and smaller stuff may work ?

I use bamboo kebab skewers for places like that. The tip makes a gentle scraper and it's mildly abrasive on the sides of the tapered tip.

Had a magnaported FA 475 that I shot with cast bullets. I would get lead build up on the front sight/base which was easily removed with a brass cartridge case with the mouth bent flat with pliers. Never had any buildup in the ports themselves but would think a bottle necked rifle case with mouth flattened would work to scrape out ports if needed.

For that matter, a little brass rod hammered flat and filed a bit sharp would do the trick.

Good suggestions, all. I notice that my front sight has a tendency to become gray after a few rounds. Some scrubber should take that off.

With a quick glance it is tough to tell if that is residue from the ports or a really crappy job welding the front sight on. Glad it’s the former, not the latter.
