A coworker of mine is harvesting trees from his property and he has a bunch of large black walnut trees. He was wondering if grip/stock makers ever purchase them that large or just work with smaller, dimensional pieces. I was curious so I figured I would ask you guys.
The large, national stock makers like Bishop bought trees, or maybe the whole forest. A stock maker in California bought whole trees, but he went out of business several years ago and I can't remember his name. Someone in Idaho bought his remaining stock and was selling it a couple of years ago. I imagine anyone making 20 or fewer stocks a year would order blanks.
Grips and stock makers normally use "Saw Logs" like smaller limbs and branches from the Black Walnut. They are easier to work with and the most demand of Black Walnut is from the trunk. Tall, straight trees with minimal branches and at least 22" at breast height will bring good money if felled/ harvested correctly. These can be used to make laminate and solid furniture.

We have a few small pieces of furniture... we had commissioned to be made from some black walnut Mrs dad had dried from bandsaw mill cut lumber... we have a lot of black walnut on the farm... I’ve been trying to trim it up so the trunk wood could be sold for veneer.... might seem like a waste but it burns easily as nicely as oak... as I build new pastures, I’ll have quite a bit of walnut to figure out what to do with...

Some walnut trees can bring $3,000 or more. Worth getting multiple quotes if has many which are large diameter, tall, and straight with not too many branches.
