Some time ago I mentioned a little project I was tossing around. Since I have done a little experiment with reforming .22 Hornet brass (Kindly provided by Magnumwheelman) to make a new cartridge, a straight-walled, rimmed centerfire .25. The idea was to make a reloadable replacement for both .22LR and .22 Magnum (depending on the load.) I even made the first cartridge as a 'proof-of concept.' I labelled it .251 TCR (Tinker Centerfire Rimmed.) (Top) .251 TCR, shown with a .38 Special cartridge for size comparison.I figured at some point I would make a single-shot pistol to develop the round some more, but there have been a lot of distractions, and I keep forgetting to by the .25 ACP 'donor' dies... Then a Colt 1849 Wells fargo reproduction got dropped in my lap as a sweetener in a deal, and it got me thinking. Naturally I would do a cartridge conversion, and I've already done one as a .22... why not make it in .25 ACP? Then I could work out the bugs with a readily available cartridge and set it up for the .251 TCR later. Seems like a good idea. I turned a cylinder out of some half-hard 4140 round bar, cut the lock-notches and sprocket for a six-shooter. Here's the gun with the new cylinder mounted. I need to make a breech-ring, probably out of 5160 spring-steel. I also need to do the barrel-liner and mount it before I can line-bore the cylinder and cut the chambers. After that I can run my .251 rifling-button through the lined barrel. There's a good bit of work left to go, but, I am pretty jazzed to finally be getting started! No, I did not cut off the barrel. That's the length it was when I got it!

cool... I'd be curious how that looks next to my 257 special??? I should have sent you a case... ( actually 257 special is same length as the 38 special )

What are the differences between the the 25 TCR, 257 Special and Bowen's 25 Flea? Anybody know?

The 257 Special is my baby... it uses a 257 rifle barrel blank, as opposed to the .251 ( 25 ACP ) bore diameter that Tinker is using... at the time I came up with the cartridge, I didn't know a .251" barrel liner was available from TJ's Liners, so my goal was kind of the same as Tinks, but I tried to make things as easy as possible, since I'm not a machinist... but then, later I made the 25 ACP revolver ( 25 ACP is semi rimmed, & actually a natural in a revolver ) using one of TJ's liners in another project, so I'm loading the 257 Special hotter now ) using the 257, allows a bigger bullet selection & then 22 Hornet cases are straight tapered to fit .257 bullets, ( I'm not swaging the base or having to turn the rims down... easy peasy ) then the cases are cut to the length of 38 special case, which works out to a cartridge OAL of the Single Six cylinder...

Wow- I had to research .25 flea just now... hard to come up with much data, but it seems similar to my .251, except that, like Magnumwheelgun's .257 Special, it uses a .257 bullet. One difference is that .257 Special and Flea use rifle bullets, and .251 TCR is meant to use pistol bullets in a range from 30-60 grains.
I decided to go with .251 diameter because I wanted to be able to use .25 ACP (like shooting .38 SPC in a .357) and there are some pretty good hollow-points available in .251. They mostly don't work well in .25 ACP, but kick the velocity up 25-50% and it's a whole 'nuther ball-game. Also, I am used to swaging bullets for odd-ball calibers, so that opens up a lot of the available .22 caliber bullets to being 'up-sized' to .251.
I figure once the bugs are worked out I'll build something on a Single-Six platform, but for now this ought to do to start.

What type of velocities are you thinking with this cartridge?

What type of velocities are you thinking with this cartridge? If I did my math right I should be able to get 1100 fps from a 3" barrel with a 60gr. bullet without breaking anything.
