After reading up on the DGW flat top 44-40s, a 44 special conversion seems like a fun sixgun. At the risk of asking stupid questions, are the new ones strong enough for “category 2” loads/on par with a colt?

The cylinders I've measure are a little thicker than Colts. But, I'm not prepared to say that equals strength. I do not load mine past 22,000 psi because that does what I want.
I will point out that Uberti builds these guns in 45 ACP. You're looking at a considerably thinner cylinder wall easily holding 21-23,000 psi.
There is no doubt in my mind that 25,000 psi 44 Special loads will be ok. That's something the owner has to determine.

Today's Beretta/Yberti single actions are every bit as strong as a Colt, if not stronger. The Uberti cylinders are .020" larger in diameter, which adds .010 extra metal to each bolt notch, which is the cylinder's weakest point. Beretta's steel is also tougher and harder than Colt's, and holds up wonderfully yo heavy use.. I have two Beretta/Uberti Stampede revolvers, and a Uberti Cattleman "Cody" model, all of which have digested countless heavy (24,000 - 28,000 psi) loads, without a hitch or a bobble..

Thank you!
I’d love to make a somewhat replication of Keith’s 7 1/2” short actioned Colt. If I come across a nice 4” 29-2 that gets immediate attention though.
