My 17 year old nephew has been staying with us while he participated in a prospect baseball camp at Oregon State. He asked if he could come down a day early and go on a mule ride then once he finished camp yesterday he asked if he could stay another day for another ride then go shooting. We did the ride this morning, returned the borrowed mule then grabbed a 10/ 22, a Colt Frontier Scout and a USFA 44 Special and a Forkin 44 Special OM conversion and headed up the road. After a few mags of 22 lr in the Ruger we went over the proper handling of the Colt and the old model Rugers. He picked up the load one skip one then load four and bring the hammer all the way back then let it down on the empty cylinder right away so he was soon shooting the Colt, ejecting empties and doing the proper reload steps.
Next up was the Forkin 44 Special and I shot the first 5 rounds so he could see the guns reaction and noise when it went off. Soon you couldn’t wipe the smile off his face with an eraser! He loved shooting both 44 Specials and was asking about getting a new Vaquero in 44 Special or a flat top 44. Another shooter may have been born today!

I taught all 6 of my nieces and nephews to shoot. It is a great feeling and a wonderful time that I treasure.

Yup, something to celebrate. With no kids here, my nieces and nephews have all spent time on my range with my hand on their shoulder. Well, one exception, sigh.

Good work Robb, did the same with my grandson and he is a great shot. We have a Model 94Trapper in 45C with a tang sight and he can’t miss.

OF ALL THE NEWBIES I HAVE STARTED SHOOTING I HAVE NEVER, EVER HAD ONE SAY "I DON'T LIKE THIS"! START THEM WITH THE RIGHT GUNS AND THEY ARE HOOKED.
