My vote is for 696. If you have one found, you better jump on it. It took me four years of searching to find this one and it's a jewel. If I had to sell my guns, this would be one of my last to go. THANK GOD I DON'T HAVE TOO. Bill

Either would do the job but my vote goes to the 44 special. Why ? It makes a bigger hole ! My short barrel 44 special has been a real pleasant surprise with its ease of shooting and accuracy. Currently stoked with Speer Gold Dots for CCW.

Not selling. I only have the 686 that I got in a trade and was surprised at how well it works for CCW when compared to my sp101 - shoots like a big gun, carries like a small one, packs quite a wallop with 125gr xtps over 17gr AA9 - 1550fps says the chrono. Plus a whole ton of development has been done on factory defensive loads for the .357 - and I get an extra round compared to a 696. But the ejector rod on the 2.5" doesn't kick the .357 length shells out very well and the hole in the end of the barrel looks kinda small to me....
So I was contemplating the near twin .44spl to it - but there aren't many good choices for factory defensive ammo. I would probably load 180gr XTPs up. And it only holds 5 (fwiw). Just kicking it around and wanted to hear what others had to say.

And taking us off course a bit....Do they make a set of grips like the ones shown above on Wickerbill's gun (and my 686) that fit on a round butt N-frame?

If I only had to pick one...Well it would be the 686, to me the only real downside of the 696 is the caliber. Now, before anyone here thinks I am attacking the 44 Special, I'm not. I probably shoot more 44 Specials out of my 629 than 44 Magnums. I really do feel as I am getting a bit older and hopefully wiser that the 44 Special is the Cartridge that can do 98 percent of what One really needs a Handgun to do. The writings of Taffin and Skelton have not hurt either.
The only reason I would pick the 686 is ease of availibilty when it comes to ammunition. It seems to me at least no matter where one goes even with the ammunition issues as of late there is at least a box or two of 38 Specials around.
I hate to sound morbid, or one to preach doom and gloom...If those who do are correct, 38 Specials, and 357 Magnums will be far easier to come across than 44 Specials.
Again with a more practical scenario..Your on a road trip to visit some friends...During your visit or while enroute you take in some targetr practice. With the 686 chances are one will find some ammunition at a local sporting goods store to stuff in it.
Just my 2 cents..Thanks for Reading.

I'll take in any unwanted 696 "orphans" and give them a good happy home with lots to eat, and plenty of companionship.....

How about a 45 acp 25-2 Jovino as concealable as any of the larger guns with a bigger hole

I'll take the 696... It will sell quick and bring enough money for a nice 3 screw Flattop!

Nice gun Len. Clean! Some of the Jovino "style" 25s I've seen have been rough around the edges.

The 6-shot .357 - the .44 Spl may have more curb-appeal to guys like us, but the extra shot is more practical (particularly with so few in the gun) and, after working over 200 handgun killing cases, I'm prepared to say that the .357 Mag certainly has everything one needs to effect accurate shot placement and adequate penetration.
