My Revolver is a 5,5 inch standard Blackhawk, I will not be Shooting any Grizzly bears around here so something around 250 to 280 grains should be good. I like the Bullets from Montana bullets pretty well in my .357 and .327 federal , but they are a bit steep. What size are you shooting from a recently built ruger ? i will probably shoot a bit under max loads for the most part 1200 fps will be more than fast enough, would you recommend a gas check at that speed ? I don't mind paying a little more for a gas check ! What are you guys shooting , in the old .45 ? thanks ...tj3006

Some will say yes & some will say no, I'm in the no corner. Having said no there are times when a gas checked bullet will out shoot a plain base bullet, most times it won't make any difference. Shoot a load that you are comfortable with & that is accurate in your gun. If you can accurately shoot a 250 gr bullet at 1200 fps you are very well armed for just about anything you will ever point your gun at. Even loaded a bit slower that big bullet is very hard to slow down once it makes contact with flesh & bone. A 45 slug is a big bullet, put it in the right place & it will work very well for you, but a bad hit will always be a bad hit, regardless of caliber. Shoot what you can handle, not what someone else tells you it takes to kill a deer, elk or bear. Good luck.

Sage wisdom from sixshot. I am also in the no corner. 45 colt is one my favorite calibers. I cast my own and my big fingers and those little gas checks don’t seem to work together. That said, I powder coat all my cast bullets, and have never seen the need for checks, even in situations where my handgun bullets are traveling much faster than 1200 fps. Some more wisdom from sixshot, shot placement is key and shoot what you shoot best.

ON MY NEXT BUY OF COMMERCIALLY CAST BULLETS I AM GOING TO BUY SOME PC'ed 250gr RNFP'S AMD SOME PC'ed 255gr SWC's, LUBED BULLETS OF WHICH FROM OTBC I SHOOT ZILLIONS OF. ALSO, TRY 9grs OF UNIQUE, NON MAGNUM PRIMER, WITH EITHER BULLET, VERY NICE SHOOTING COMBINATIONS (GOOD S&W REVOLVER LOADS).

This 454-640 Cramer bullet is great! Its also available from GT bullets, its has shot very well from my 5 1/2” Bisley Vaquero (large frame) with 10.0gr Power Pistol. www.gtbullets.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=28Lefty - Thanks for the heads up! I guess I must have seen that bullet, but didn't recognize it for what it was. Out of curiosity, how does the HP bullet nose hold up when seating? I'm pretty sure the 280 Keith bullets that I ordered will perform well (they tested at 11BHN, & are a nice snug cylinder throat fit), but I guess I should call up GT, & order some of the 454-640's for comparison... Can't have too many bullets, & variety is the spice of life, right?

As i start looking for a good bullet for my 45LC, i would like to know what you think is the size to start with ? .452 or .453 ? or ? For best results, first determine your bore groove diameter. This can be done w/ a slug, or better yet, VERY carefully w/ a pin gauge which will show the bore diameter, at which point you can add .010" - to give full groove diameter. It will also show any bore restrictions / tight spots - which you can lap out. It's not as hard as it sounds. Once you have accurately determined groove diameter, add .001" - .0015" for ideal bullet diameter. If bullet diameter is larger then your cylinder throat ID, they (the throats) should be uniformly opened (honed or reamed) to your ideal bullet diameter - or maybe .0005" larger. I am local to our esteemed member 2 Dogs, & he assisted w/ the bore / cylinder throat measuring - utilizing pin gauges. Never seen it done like that, & it was an eye opener. My bore had a slight restriction (I think most of them do), which I lapped out. Took 24 lapping loads. Fermin (2 Dogs) determined that my groove diameter was .452", & as such, opened the throats to .453" w/ a reamer. I ordered .453" CB's (280 Keith LSWC-PB) from GT (they measure .4525"+), & are a slight push through slip fit in the cylinder throats. It may sound a bit overwhelming, but it's really not rocket science. Research / do it right the first time, & it's a one shot deal. Cast bullet Nirvana. I'd recommend you contact Fermin, as he is not only a wellspring of knowledge, but quite helpful (even to the point of his own detriment) as well. Fermin also has in informational write up published on GunBlast, regarding barrel leading, that is well worth the read. I can provide additional details on the process if you like. Also, check out Beartooth Bullets for additional information, & their lapping kit - if needed.

For slugging your bore and throats, I use egg sinkers for fishing!!....occasionally you’ll need to bump them up in diameter with a vice or hammer but the soft lead makes pushing them thru real easy. Some oil on bore, throat and sinker help as well, then just measure the sinker. The relationship between bore and throat is what can matter most for determining a good bullet diameter, not just one.

The nose seems to hold up just fine during seating.

I called Matts bullets and placed an order for , 100 260 grain Keith style swc,s, no gas check. Nice guy and helpful. He told me that if the bullets fall through the chambers with just gravity , i likely will want to bump to the next size. The price is quite good , so i hope they shoot well, cause then i can order in bulk, and be set for .45LC bullets. Check my new post on .327 federal bullets. ...tj3006
