In 2014 when the 69 was introduced I was underwhelmed at the press release photos. A couple months later I walked into my favorite LGS and there was a 69 4.2" under the counter. Again unimpressed to the max.
But when the clerk who knows I love DA revolvers handed it to me; and it rested in my hand and I opened the cylinder and looked at the forcing cone, I really liked what I saw. I liked the idea of an L Frame 5 shot 44 Magnum so much I purchased it. Still have it and it is the most accurate 44 I own. It outshoots my pre29 5" and I find that amazing, but very true.
I assign this accuracy to several things but most of all the K/L gripframe fits my hand like a glove. It's a pleasure to pack this 69 in the woods with a Keith 245 over 10,0 of Unique or Universal and it only takes up the weight and space of a L frame on my belt.

Have had both. Ruger had full under lug. Hole in Smith sucks. Still have the 69. It's not going down the road.

I'm a little late with a response but here it is... I purchased a new Model 69 4.25" .44 mag in Feb. I am dissappointed in the quality and accuracy. To put it shortly, it is trash. The fit and finish is poor, the DA trigger is horrendously scratchy and inconsistent 8 pounds. The cylinder does not line up with the barrel so it is shaving bullets resulting in poor accuracy. It is going back to S&W.

Take heart Wardog,
That 69 has a sterling reputation. I'm betting you get the kinks worked out.
SW support has been nothing short of spectacular for me personally. They've covered lots of problems for me over the years when they had no obligation to do so. The custom shop has been outstanding on action jobs.
You have a great piece. Keep the faith.

I have heard very few reports like that about the 69, not saying I doubt a word though. It seems that anymore just about all of the manufacturers send one of those out every now and then. Just really makes you wonder how they ever made it in the box.

I have a couple S&W recent manufacture that need to visit the mothership for a couple tweaks; but my 69 is about as close to perfect as one could ask.

Am ashamed to say I have the m69 with my typical grip choice and action job done as well as the 3” gp100 which has action job but still awaits grips and front sight! The shameful part is I haven’t shot either yet

shorty500 don't feel too bad I'm in the same boat. I now have a flat top blued .44 Special Ruger, the reason I got to thinking on the guns this thread is about, as well as a GP 100 .327 that I haven't shot yet. Don't have any .327 loaded yet but I have thousands of .44 Specials that my dad loaded right before he passed so I really feel bad.

Latest update- due to lack of wood grips that suit me and lack of time to make my own- the old compact rubber/wood hybrid compact version of gp100 grip arrived this week and has been installed! Hopefully over the 4th holiday can shoot both but the gp100 really deserves something that isn’t a blazing green ball of fire! For a front sight. Will most likely receive a Novak gold bead soon

Groo here I have a Gp-100 WC 3in and an M-69 2 3/4in. I wanted a 44 that could handle factory mags "in a pinch", but used lighter loads for fun.. Then the Gp100 10mm came along,,, I can buy mid range loads for fun and full up ones for serious many places. Unlike the 44 spec..... The 40 cal is just right for the Gp and S&W redesigned the L frame for the 44... All is good...

I looked at both and bought a Ruger stainless flat top Bisley. The only problem with the Bisley is it is 44 oz.

In all honesty I would choose the Blackhawk, (S.S. Bisley FT), but that is not an option here. In that case I would go with the GP-100, but I am a bit bias.
