So I just bought a Ruger Flat Top Blackhawk 4 5/8” .44 Special and I really like it. I also have a 5” GP 100 .327 that I really like. Those of you that have both the 5” GP and the 4” 69. If you could start over which would you pick? I will say that I’m looking at the 69 as a DA .44 Special platform. I have Magnums if I want one.
TIA for any answers.

I have the 5” GP100 and have to say it may be the most accurate gun I own ... I don’t have a S&W 69 but I do have a S&W 624 and I really like it as well. The GP100 may be easier to find. This is the pair of .44 Specials ... S&W 624 4” (N frame):

Both can be nice shooters.
Ruger customer service now has a saying, "That's within specs". And S&W has a hole in the side.
What are you gonna do?

Any concern about the forcing cone on the GP 100? From what I’ve seen the 69s seem to be holding up well even with all Magnum use.

It’s tough. I’ve been thinking about the 69 for quite some time. The 5” GP in .327 is a beautiful gun.

I kind of want a gp-100 but I’m suspicious of the really thin forcing cone area of the barrel. I already have a 4.25” 69 and I love it

Gorgeous piece of El Paso Saddlery. Clean lines. I only have one example, but I enjoy it a lot.

I had the GP100 and really liked it. I only sold it for one reason: I wanted to be able to shoot the Keith load (250 Keith SWC over 17 grains 2400), which I do keep on hand to shoot in my Bisley flattop BH in 44 Spl.
I sold the GP100 and picked up the S&W 69 snubby. I have fired exactly 5 Keith loads and 5 44 mag loads in the 69. Stout, both, but most loads are light 44 Spl.
I honestly enjoyed the GP100 more.... trigger, etc., but worried too much about the thin forcing cone to ever shoot anything more than 15.5k psi loads through it.

I sold the GP100 and picked up the S&W 69 snubby. I have fired exactly 6 Keith loads and 6 44 mag loads in the 69. Stout, both, but most loads are light 44 Spl. I honestly enjoyed the GP100 more.... trigger, etc., but worried too much about the thin forcing cone to ever shoot anything more than 15.5k psi loads through it. This is my worry Dougader. Like I said I don’t want to make a Magnum out of it but I’d like to be reasonably sure it would take a steady diet of Skeeters load at the least. I lusted after a 696 for many years and never pulled the trigger, so to speak because of the thin forcing cone rumors. When the 69 came out I thought here we go again, but apparently people have been happy with them. If i didn’t like the 5” GP in .327 so much I’d just get the 69. Not really knowing the potential of the GP, or just having concerns about it gives me pause however. I’ve read that Clements conversions are supposedly safe with Elmer’s load but have never seen the forcing cone to compare on one of them. The poll indicates that the 69 gets the early vote here. Think I’ll just ruminate.

This is how the .44 would look with your .327 ... 😎

I own a 44 Special GP100. It is a tough little gun. But... Between it and a S&W 69 I pick S&W. Don't like some of the newer stuff about the S&W but when I pull the innards out of the two there is no doubt I like the S&W better

If the GP100 could handle the Keith load, I would have kept it. I normally shoot light 44 Spl loads from my S&W 69, but keep it loaded for SD around the house with a 240 lead hp I got from Sixshot over a stiff load of Blue Dot.

Of course, having a magnum chambered gun and wanting loads possible in the Special length brass, the perfect downloading solution is deepseating those SWC's.. in magnum brass.
