A year ago I decided the hard way that I could no longer see the sights on my old model Bearcat. A gun I don't use a lot, but it was often my companion on long walks and hunting trips small game opportunities. My thought was that I'd replace it with a new adjustable sighted mode, if fiber optics were available, or possibly a 22/45 Lite model I could use with either fiber optics or a dot. The adjustable sighted Bearcat and the 22/44 LITE weigh almost the same thing, 24 and 25 ounces respectively. Pro for the Bearcat is it's so small. Con for the Bearcat is it's so small. Not being a super high priority, it got put on the back burner.
But last night I was eyeballing a Ruger LCRX in 22LR. Eight shots, 17.3 ounces. Ugly as all get-out, but a practical tool. I already own a pretty .22 double action. My biggest issue is that it's a full sized gun (I'll already be carrying a full sized gun... and possibly a long gun), The Bearcat tucks away and is forgotten about so much easier. Or at least my old alloy one is.
So I was wondering if anyone has spent some time working with the LCRX 22? (I shot the original LCR 10 years ago) Likes, dislikes? Accuracy? Probably my biggest question. I'm looking to knock squirrels out of tree tops, so something with only close range "belly gun" accuracy won't cut it.

I have two 38's. My friend has a 327 and 22. He always brings the 22 when we go shooting so I get to shoot it. The 38's and the 327 beat the accuracy of the 22 by a long shot. Even shooting 32 longs in the 327 is more accurate. Oh and the trigger is heavier than the center fires, noticeably. I was going to by one, but his has never impressed me enough, even he says the gun is only a so,so gun that will more than likely get traded down the line. If you reload, the 327 is fun. I am waiting for one in 3" LCRX.

Hmmm.... maybe I'll swing my thinking back towards the 22/45 LITE. I just don't like the Mark IV's. I think they're ugly and didn't think the earlier versions were any trouble to take apart and put back together. Finding a mark 3 LITE I can buy might be problematic. The threaded muzzle makes it an evil baby killing assault weapon here, making it a no go. I know they make non threaded mark 4's.. dunno about the 3's.

I have both a Ruger Mklll 22/45 LITE and a S&W 422. I have had far fewer issues with the 422. Its accuracy and reliability outshine the Ruger's by far. The 22/45 has had many upgrades to make it a better gun but the 422 right out of the box runs better. The 422 is the black version of the silver 622. Both are available in 4 and 6 inch barrels with either fixed or adjustable sights. An all stainless steel version the 2206 is quite a bit heavier. I also own a 3 inch version, a model 2214. 2214 is black 2213 is silver. This series is no longer in production but if you can find one they are worth every penny. They are one of the best kept secrets in the 22Lr pistol world.

Can you permanently attach the thread cover and make it acceptable for NY? What about a S&W Model 63? Bigger than a Bearcat and it has adjustable sights.

^ I have a 422. On the range it's good. In the woods lighting conditions, not as much. I had a 2213 for years and wish now that I kept it. I sold it when I got the 422 which came to me under sad circumstances and thus has sentimental value.
They make a non threaded Mrk 4 LITE, just not crazy about the Mark 4 or the asking prices.
