One of the things that drives me crazy when I go visit my daughter and her family in San Diego are the guys riding motorcycles and doing the lane splitting maneuver. Supposedly there are certain rules pertaining to bikers riding between the lanes of traffic but naturally once a rule is written, folks think it was made to be broken. Don't get me wrong, I rode bikes for years and finally had to give it up because I have no control over my throttle hand once I get on a bike. Riding at red line on my Zrx1200R was obviously dangerous but I loved it. Still, when I'm driving down a Southern California freeway at 70+mph, it scares the bejeezus out of me when some guy goes flying by me doing 90 right between me and the car next to me.
My wife is in San Diego visiting my daughter and grand son while the S-I-L is away on a training exercise at another base. She called today all shaky voiced asking me to pray for a guy who had just pulled the lane splitting/ lane changing thing at high speeds and wiped out right in front of them. She was in the car with my 4 year old grandson while my daughter, a stay at home mom who is a trained nurse, ran to the guy laying on the side of the road. The called 911 and got the ambulance on the way while KT dealt with the guy. She stabilized his injuries, relayed vitals and triage information to the ambulance as it was headed their way and even got the guys wife on this phone like he wanted so she could bring her up to date and let her know he was alive and help was on the way so she could meet them at the hospital.
I always said raising one daughter was harder than raising 6 boys and there were nights when I went to bed tired from trying to figure out how to be a good and creative parent to my daughter when she was growing up but hearing what she did today and how she handled the situation makes me feel good that she turned out the way she did in spite of my parenting.
