Picked up a beautiful little used 97 from a forum member today. I had to go out to the property for something so I threw it in the truck and was gonna let off five rounds and pop the cherry. I have factory loaded Buffalo Bore 45+P that won't fit. Bummer. Anyone else experience this? Thanks, Greg

Without measuring anything I was guessing the recesses for the case weren't deep enough. I'll look at the other end Greg, thank you

I'm guessing tight throats cut for shorter or narrower bullets. Either different ammo or having the throats honed will get you shooting.
Checking OAL against the cylinder length is easy, and dropping an empty in will almost certainly show good brass and chambers.
I've had the same issue with some Ruger 45 Colt guns and heavyweight handloads.

i believe the cylinder requires 1.6 inch or less to fit (an article in handloader recommended 1.590-(handloader no 231)

BB makes some specifically for the 97 with a shorter OAL. 1.59 or so.
The other +Ps won’t fit.
Plenty of loads and lead bullets that fall into the smaller OAL to have some fun.

I found that all of my FA83's can be picky about cast bullet size and OAL. Jacketed bullets aren't any problems as long as OAL is watched closely. The 44 and 454 need a heavy crimp otherwise they like to move those bullets.
I sure do appreciate the tightness of the whole package, but they are a high performance machine with all the quirks involved. I'm just rambling cause I know you already knew this.
FWIW, 2 of mine had to go back for some throat work as they were just too tight for a cast bullet even .001" oversize. It was just too much of a pain to have to resize bullets a second time after they grew after a few months. The ammo shot great, but I really had to mash those cast bullets into the chamber. After the throat work, they dropped right in with a plunk.

I doubt there would be any measurable degradation of accuracy with opened throats in a FA.

I think Zac has the answer. I'll have two varieties of this stuff in a few days and will report measurements.

I sent them in the same time and had some other work done while there. I may be wrong, but I seem to remember that the throating didn't cost anything. The conversation was that they wanted me to be happy with the revolvers and I was able to explain what I was dealing with along with sending some of my bullets in too. Shipping was murder though. As far as accuracy is concerned, the revolvers thought they were Benchrest rifles before they left, and were convinced they were when they got back. Sorry for the derail.....

The smallest 45 Colt I've fired was a full-size Vaquero. I suspect the FA97 would be entertaining with stout loads.
