I finally finished making brass for my Horvath Custom OMBH Bisley 45 Colt so I could start rolling my own.
I decided to go with a Rim Rock 270gr Keith-style SWC over 22.5 gr of Win 296 for starters. I know this is not a full-on Linebaugh level load, but it's still a fair bit above Speer's minimum with 296, and I know 296 isn't a safe choice for light loading.
Anyone using a similar load?

This is probably one of the best collections of load data I've seen for that approximate weight bullet. www.riflemagazine.com/magazine/PDF/HL%20246partial.pdf?Though the bullet in the article comes in at about 285 grains. Is this a rechambered medium frame or a large frame old model I always used 24 grains with a 260-285 grain bullet in my NM bisley and was happy.

I run 22.5 with the 300 and 24.0 with a 275gn. You can always figure out how much case capacity your bullet takes up and load your powder to 100 percent density. This is a good place to start.

As there are variations of the mold by different makers I would resort to case capacity rules for w296/h110 and work up cautiously. No charge recommendations here because the only time I burnt w296 under mine was a very educating experiment in the .454 Casull

I wound up settling on 23.0 grs instead of 22.5 to start. I used a full rotation on my Lee FCD for a firm roll crimp. Also used Winchester WLP's. After 20 rounds, I it left almost no un-burnt powder behind and leading was almost nonexistent. Accuracy seemed really good, given my marksmanship skills and poor indoor range lighting. More to come on that later.
There are no signs of primer flow and the primers are ever so slightly more flattened than factory Federal jacketed loads. Recoil was manageable, but you definitely know you're firing a serious load! It barks with authority. I asked Mr. Horvath to make the chambers tight and extraction was the same as factory pressure loads.
At this point I don't see any need to bump up the powder charge. For now, I'll work with this load. The purpose of this gun was for shooting hot loads and this was my first outing with such ammo. I am really pleased and look forward to getting to know this gun.

Gorgeous gun! I've never hunted with 24 grains and a 250-275 grain bullet, but shot it a bunch. It gave good accuracy in my guns and enough power to let you know you pulled the trigger.

I believe 24 grs (H110) & the 260 gr Keith was the load I used on one of my elk. It was a rather long shot.

Apparently John Linebaughs article on his site about 45 Colt loads for the S&W Model 25 has been taken down. The 45 Colt article there now only talks about Ruger loads.

Mines pretty close to 401 Bobcat's. 265 grn Keith gc over 23.5 grns H110. Pretty decent load.

So 22.5 gr. with a 270gr. should be good starting place.

I've got an OM Blackhawk that started life as a .30 Carbine and was rebuilt into a tight .45 Colt, it's the blue gun in my avatar. I load mostly Unique, and 2400 sticking to the 20,000 psi loads from that article with the 270 SAA bullet. I've also loaded and shot a bunch of the 8 grains of Unique and 16 grains of 2400 in it from the first table. All have been great from that particular gun. I've got a 5 1/2" Accusport NM also and I reserve the 32,000 CUP loads for it.
