I was thinking about having one of my little packin' pistols upgraded with David's retro rear sight modification. Do any of you have experience with them on a stainless gun? I liked the idea of his dovetail front and the retro rear cosmetically. He built me a 5 shot a while back and I inquired about that feature but he does not install them on guns with oversized cylinders.

Groo here I had Andy Horvath fit the sight from an S&W j frame to my Bisley he made 41mag. The change is very "old school" and I like it alot.

Ditto on the J frame rear sight. I added one to a 45 Colt Bisquero and it improved the sight picture significantly without spoiling the look of the gun. Plus I have the versatility of and adjustable sight now.

Noooooo!
Do what you want but that J frame sight has that unsightly hump on it.
David's rear sight does not. His sight resembles a pre-war Colt rear sight.
Of course if you can find one of the old Colt sights they would work too.

I had Clements put one on a stainless New Vaquero , never really liked it after that and sold it . The work was just fine , but the rear sight is pretty flimsy in my opinion . The only screw that is holding it down on the gun is that front screw and being as it is not a very thick sight, you can pry it up in the rear with your finger , VERY easily , if that rear sight catches on anything , it will pry right up . It is a pretty fragile set-up and not something I would put on an outdoors carry gun . The front sight is huge also , mine didn't fit in any of my holsters as I recall . A guy is way better off just buying a midframe BlackHawk in my opinion if you want raditional adjustable sights or use the j-frame sight as I believe that it screws down with both the front and rear screws.
I had a local smith mill the front sight off of my Vaquero and then cut a dovetail and install a Freedom arms front sight , this worked excellent . Nice, crisp , low profile and easy to see front post that is adjustable for windage and they are available in any height from Freedom arms .

The post above by kooz is interesting to read in that I happily have found none of his findings in my particular instance. I sighted it in at 25yds for the 325gr gas-checked loads pictured below, so I appreciated the tall front sight. I carried it in two holsters (Blackhawk size) during the KY deer season and in each it slipped easilly in and out. I just now tried half a dozen other holsters out of that big box of various holsters that we all have acquired over the years. Same finding. Mine fits. Lastly, after reading kooz's post, I went to check for play in the rear sight. I can detect no play whatsoever in it, even when I forcefully try to pull up or push down on it in the area of the blade. I have the rear elevation screw turned in a bit and I think that in opposition to the larger screw in the front it helps to snugly affix the whole assembly. Based on my experience with this sight, I'm having David do another for me on a blue 45. It is good that there are plenty of other options out there from which to choose.

I had Clements do his rear sight and dovetail front on my bright stainless large frame Vaquero. Here are some pics, sorry they dont show the rear sight very well.

Incase it isnt clear, this rear sight doesnt extend over the topstrap. It isnt the Smith & Wesson type sight. He used to have a package for the Vaquero, i dont see it on his website anymore. A small area is machined out of the top strap right above the hammer and this wedge shaped sight is inserted. I remember him asking if i wanted all black or white outline. I chose all black. I also had a vertical gold bar in the front sight.

To each his own, but why buy a fixed sight New Vaquero and have an adjustable rear sight and a large ramped front sight installed when one could just buy a Flat Top Convertible?
I will say I like the sights on patdaddy's revolver as they maintain the low profile and the simple ruggedness of fixed sights, yet appear they would provide a sight picture comparable to adjustable sights.

Cholla It's purely based on preference. The practical thing would be to use a gun with adjustable sights from the start.
