The young friend that I gave a RockChucker to was here to help me a plumbing issue a month ago or so. He wouldn't take money. I've never had a chrono or access to one. So I did get him to take 60 bucks and told him to ante in and get us a chrono. I'll add in a bit more too if needed. We'll share it.

The trick to a chronograph is ! Don't Shoot It !!!! I've had lots of Shooter's Chrony brand . they work good. No they are not an Ohler or Magneto Speed or that acoustic one. But they do OK. Don't cost a lot and if you keep fresh batteries with it . Are reliable. I recommend the one with the remote display or the printer. My current one is the F1 model. It only displays the current shot and doesn't catalog the shots. So its kind of a pain logging each shot by hand. But it works. Gives time to keep from overheating the throat. The sun's position at the time of the shot has some affect , sometimes a lot of affect. On the accuracy of the readings with every optical chronograph. Specs of unburnt powder will give an error reading so I never shoot closer than 15 feet . Muzzle to chrony. Its best to take the time to set up a target that puts everything inline from the bench , thru the chrony , to the bullseye ! In snow on the ground conditions . Get a big cardboard box. Spray paint it dull flat black inside. Cut a 4-6" circle in both ends where you want the bullets to pass thru the screens. There are lots of tricks to getting an optical chronograph to work correctly in different conditions. Personally I think the most accurate conditions are a lighted chronograph and shoot in pitch black dark with just the target and chrony lighted. Where your down south, your sun is higher in the sky than up here so you have the potential to have much easier and more accurate and consistent readings. Bet ya didn't know it was this complicated didja ? ;-)

I second the Chrony. Decent kit & works for my needs. I've got the one with the remote display & it catalogs shots & gives you hi, low, average, ES & SD.

I got the CED M2. All the electronics are separate from the sensors. It cost more than several others and gives more information than I need but I also don't need to worry about shooting the brains. Most of the other comments by coldtriggerfinger apply.

Is that an offer of some kind ? I've never had one, been loading since early '80's. Young friend wants to load for things outta my comfort zone and I want us to be safe. Am curious as to many of my years old recipes too.

I think a chronograph is extremely important. A 3 cent primer and an inexpensive brass case is a poor excuse for a pressure vessel. And someone that says they can judge bullet speed by recoil and muzzle blast is full of $μ¡+ !! Once a guy starts chronographing it is a real eye opener. Buy a box of 105 gr 243 ammo that lists around 3000 fps on the box. Chrono it and it's only showing an erratic 2650 fps. Ect .

Thank you folks. Have related your thoughts onto my friend to add to his research. He is leaning towards the mentioned Caldwell so far.
