Good evening fellas. I was out finishing my Christmas shopping and was in local gun store (needed a break from normally shopping) when I saw a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington. First I noticed no cross bolt safety.....second I noticed the “waffle top” receiver.....that prompted me to check the rifling.....yep, no microgroove rifling. I started to get excited. Dating the serial puts it to be a 1952 model.
Now comes the part Im not quite sure about and need your help. After cycling the action, the hammer was cocked, I pushed on the back end of the bolt with it in battery and saw the bolt move forward Im gonna say .020”. In my mind I thought this isnt right and there may be some unsafe headspace issues. I checked my 35 I already own and the bolt doesnt move forward at all.
Am I right by saying this older 35 has problems? Or do I need to go back tomorrow and buy it? Lol
Thanks guys

After reading this, I went downstairs and picked up a 1952 waffle top in .32 spc, after cycling the lever and checking the bolt, it’s solid. I think you need to go back and look a little harder, see if it’s anything a good cleaning can fix. I’d sure be tempted if the price was right.

Shouldn't move that much. My guess is a worn locking bolt....but that's just a guess. You'd really need to pull the gun down to find the cause. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

Thanks for the help guys. I went back to the shop and they wouldnt work with me. Would even take the trigger lock or lever lock off let alone let me chamber an empty virgin case. Haha, when I pulled the case out of my pocket you thought I had a grenade in my hand. The salesman freaked out and just wouldnt act sensible. I asked if he had wiggle room on price. Best he could do was $50 off, being pretty irritated I walked away from it. Another one will turn up some time.

Here is a bit of interesting info,....I checked my three 336’s. The waffle top is a custom 50 Alaskan and does show a bit of movement in the bolt when the chamber is empty, none when a round is in the chamber. My 35 and 30-30, both newer models show no perceptible movement empty or loaded.
Given the ease of finding a replacement part, if the original price was good I might be tempted to purchase, and replace the part myself.

Rumor I heard, was that someone committed suicide in one of their stores, with one of their guns, and carried in ammo... they went way overboard afterwards... Probably why the guy freeked, thought you had a cartridge... At some point, you need to be able to examine a used gun, before purchase...

I understand where they are coming from lets be reasonable and practical here. It was plainly obvious I had a case only, in my particular instance. Its water under the bridge now.....and Im happy with the 45-70!
