Looking at a Ruger American in 450 Bushmaster. A small carbine that probably kicks like the proverbial Mule, but a neat concept. Shoots a .452 slug at 2000 fps. This looks a fun project!!
Has anyone played with this little beast? Looks like a good setup for a TC 275 grain hard cast bullet. Great little companion carbine.

I have a Ruger #1 so chambered and bought my son the Ruger American.
Very useful round to be certain. Much more so for handloaders.

I don't personally own one, but I have a friend who recently purchased one in a Ruger American as well and has been getting stellar performance out of it with Hornady FTX and the Barnes XFB. Bought it as a light weight short distance woods thumper.

They also chambered their Ruger Scout Carbine in 450 Bushmaster. That would be a nice one to carry around.

My appetite is getting whetted. I now work in a LGS and it's rifle season. No interest in the 450 but I sold a Marlin 45-70 last week for twice the money.
Thinking a rig like this would go in my camper/ truck. Bullet selection IMHO would be key. Anyone on this forum use one this or any hunting season?

I have a 16" Bushmaster. The Hornady factory 250gr load is 2100 fps out of the 16" barrel. Mine is very accurate with most rounds touching at 100 yards. I have reloaded for it using magnum XTP's and get good accuracy but not like the factory Hornady ammo. I did have hang fire issues using 296/h110 and regular small rifle primers. I switched to small rifle magnum primers and the hang fires stopped. I eventually switched to Lil'gun powder and it ignites easier than 296/h110. Regular small rifle primers work fine with Lil'Gun.

EBG great info on reloading the beast. Vmaxsplat, great rifle as I have an early Ruger Scout in 308 and it is my favorite rifle. The 450 appeals to me as a "one shot" stop solution to critters with teeth and claws. Especially in campsites or hunting camps in National or State Forest lands. We do have a "bounty" of black bear and wolves in this part of Idaho with the occasional Cougar thrown in for good measure. So a weapon that is quick and handy, light weight (and the Scout is not) with a fat slug that has a lot of smash and penetration. Bullet selection is key.
In an adrenalin rush situation I'll never feel the recoil.
