This morning I headed out on a recon mission for elk on some state land I was unfamiliar with, little did I know I would pickup my second handgun big game harvest. Last month I harvested my first big game animal (a Wyoming pronghorn) by way of revolver, and today I was fortunate enough to fill my Wyoming deer tag in the same manner! As I was familiarizing my self with a healthy section of state land, in which I am hoping to harvest an elk on later in the season, I found my self walking up to a very steep ravine and in the back of my mind I though (maybe I should draw my Ruger single action chambered in 41 Magnum, just in case there is a buck or elk bedded below me.) For once listening to the voices in my head, I drew my revolver and edged to the top of the ravine. To my surprise, there was nice little 2 by 3 mule deer bedded below me (later ranged at 35yds). Having a deer valid deer tag in my pocket, I thumbed back the hammer on my blackhawk. At that moment, the deer must have heard the "click" of the revolver being cocked, and blew out of his bed and ran across the draw. In true mule deer fashion, he made the mistake of stopping (at a latter range finder indicated distance of 61 yds) and looking back to see what the noise was. At that point I leveled the sights and let him have it! At the shot he dropped, then got up and plowed forward on his chin for a few yards. I put one more in him as he was trying to make an escape, and he went down not 40 yard from the initial shot! As they say then the work began. I was by myself, and 1 and 3/4 miles form the truck! I proceeded to bone out my trophy and pack it back to the truck, smiling the whole way! To say I am hooked on revolver hunting is an understatement! Thank you to all the people on this forum for influencing me to become a handgun hunter. The gratification that comes from harvesting a game animal on Public land with a revolver is unrivaled! I do have pictures on my phone, however I still have not figured out the picture posting thing on this forum. If one of you tech savy members would be willing to pm me your email address, I would be happy to send you the pics if you would be so kind to post them for me.
