I have my grandfather's old Thompson Center Renegade rifle, 54 cal percussion gun. The rifle was used by several family members for various deer and elk hunts through the years. One of my uncle's used it years ago for an elk camp, didn't return it for a few years, and naturally it turned out didn't clean it properly badly pitting the inside of the barrel. I cleaned it up the best I could years ago but time hasn't improved the barrel and with it being my grandfathers gun I'm thinking it is time to find a new barrel for it.
I remember years ago Thompson Center had a huge selection of barrels for their black powder rifles available but sadly those days are long gone. Heck try and find anything for traditional styled muzzleloaders these days, everything is plastic inlines that make AR-15s seem warm and cuddly.
Where would you guys start looking for a new barrel?

I don’t know if you post on cast boolits or not. I also don’t know if this will help or not, but there is alot of muzzleloader guys on there. You could try an add in swappin and sellin there. Doesn’t cost anything. It might be worth a try. Good luck!

There's usually TC barrels of all types listed on eBay, I've put several complete TC muzzleloader's together from parts purchased on there...As another member mentioned, Track of the Wolf has aftermarket & occasionally TC factory barrels for sale as well.

I don't know if Ed Rayl is still doing muzzleloader barrel work but when Green Mountain closed out their 62 caliber smooth barrel TC Renegade drop ins, I sent one to him to be rifled. It is incredibly accurate. He might be able to take it out to 58 or 62 cal for you. The Gun Works Muzzleloading Emporium also does muzzleloader rebore work and may be able to restore your original barrel, albeit in a larger caliber. www.thegunworks.com/All that being said, eBay or one of the muzzleloading suppliers who sell replacement barrels will be the best bet for a drop in.

I was perusing Track of the Wolf's website a week or so ago, and I think that they did have perhaps one Renegade barrel. Look in the parts for Orpahned or Discontinued Muzzle Loaders section. Otherwise, you're pretty much limited to Ebay or GunBroker.

I like the idea of boring it out. It will still be the same fun. If you replace the entire barrel assembly, it’s not grandpas gun anymore

Consider calling the Log Cabin Shop, in Lodi Ohio. http://www.logcabinshop.com Maybe Dixie Gun Works too. I do also like the idea of re-boring out to .56 or .58. If memory serves right, the Renegade has a heavy barrel. A size up, heavier than my Lyman Great Plains .54. If you go with re-boring, the .56 will likely be a round ball gun then, not many or any mini/maxi bullets available. I've killed a few deer with the patched .54 round ball and have no qualms about that issue.

I hadnt thought of Ebay, I haven't ever bought anything from Ebay but they have several of the 54 cals for sale at the moment. Heck might buy a new barrel and rebore this one.
We will see, thanks for the new directions though gentlemen...

The 62 caliber barrel I have, is twisted for round balls. It shoots them almost into the same hole at 50 yards. And at 342 grains for a .610 ball, it hits with some authority. I've never messed with any other projectiles. Accurate Molds has got a few short 62 caliber designs that might be fun to try in mine but I don't know if I want to buy a mold when it shoots round balls so well. I keep hoping to get drawn for the Fort Rich/Elmendorf muzzleloader moose hunt but as of yet haven't scored that tag.

If you prefer bullets to round balls, they make sabots in .45/.58.
