I had a 454 Alaskan, and while I liked the gun and was pleasantly surprised at how manageable it was to shoot even full-tilt 454 ammo, I let it go based on resale prices and how much velocity I lost compared to my 7.5" SRH. I could shoot the same exact bullet, a 335 grain CP WLNGC, with a whole lot less muzzle blast, recoil, and violent torque from my 5.5" BH in 45 Colt.
335 WLNGC/28 W296 in 454 cases Ruger SRH 7.5" = 1430 fps Alaskan 2.5" = 1174 fps
335 WLNGC/22 W296 in 45 Colt cases BH 45 Colt 5.5" = 1211 fps

Ok which cal do yall prefer? The 480 or the 454 in the Alaskan? Im still in process of saving to get me a 6 1/2 bisley in 480 to match my 480 4 5/8 bisley. Mainly thinking about the Alaskan to carry while hiking and as a toy. we dont have brown bears here but a big blacky u never know ,I have been charged by a few but most I have been able to change there minds in one way or other. I like to have enough gun no matter what especially when my kids are with me. So wgat yall think, 480 or 454. I already load for the 480 but the 454 I could shoot 45 colt in it. so i am haveing hard time deciding on which one.

For a gun packed to be used on short notice, no time for ear plugs, I'll choose the larger bore/lower pressure option. The shorty 480 BSBH will be going to camp this weekend.

The snubnose Super Redhawk cannon makes yet another reason for DEEP SEATING. David Bradshaw
