I have both a 454 Casull, & a 480 Ruger Alaskan... I really, really like the 480... the 454 is accurate enough... & I don't find the actual recoil that bad, however it does have a brutal muzzle blast with full power Casull loads...
I do shoot both of them well...

Didn’t own the 454 long enough to test accuracy but it was a fun gun to shoot and yea, recoil isn’t brutal. You will get looks at an indoor range.
Just found it to be a little nose heavy for me, looking for a Redhawk 45 square butt myself but if you dig the Alaskan they’re hard to beat in size to performance

was thinking about the 480. Be nice to carry when hiking way back in.

I have the .480. Upper left target was shot while chrographing loads. The three at right were shot offhand. If you reload, recoil can be whatever you want it to be. The 380/400gr at 1,050 fps is more of a push vs the the snappy recoil of the higher velocity cartridges (like the .454). Hip carry feels a bit odd to me -- don't know exactly how to explain it -- maybe too top heavy. Empty weight: 42.8 oz. Loaded weight: 50.2 oz with 6 rounds 400gr. Paul

One more thing - you'll need a higher front sight or mod to rear to shoot heavy bullets. My gun shoots dead on with the 325gr factory at 25 yds and rear sight bottomed out.

Linda asked me what gun I wanted for Christmas this evening, and a Ruger Alaskan in .454 was one of the first things that occurred to me...

I love the Alaskan model, when I bought one in 454 that was the turning point for me in my revolver journey. I only sold it to buy a .480 version when funds allow.

I’ve shot one a few cylinders in 44 mag and was really impressed. The recoil wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

Have had the hots for one for awhile, but until yesterday at Field and Stream in Erie I'd not seen one to hold. Years ago had a 44RH with a dot sight that needed a bandolier type holster to pack and was just BIG. I got rid of it when I realized I shot the 44SBH as well and it belt carried fine in a Bianchi cross draw. So with the past RH experience had concerns as to bulk and size, reach to trigger,etc.. The folks at the Erie Field n Stream store grudgingly allowed me to handle the Alaskan, there were some sighs. I didn't even tell them I was from Ohio and could not purchase the gun. But anyway. I liked the fit and finish, sights ok (I'd put taller thinner and maybe FO on front) The bulk and weight are still beltable for me. They had a 900+ price tag on it and guy didn't know or want to see if 454 n 480's were priced the same. Obviously the 480 would be the lightest. It came down to my medium sized hands though. It may happen yet, adapt and do best I can, but for now the M69 S&W 44mag just fits way better. Darn.

Well here's one for four grand, guess that's why I don't own one! www.gunbroker.com/item/787139277***** “purchased on auction.... as one of three prototypes used to develop the new model.”----sales plug on Gunbroker. Funny, it doesn’t look like the one I handled. And the man behind the SRH Alaskan, foundry director, ceramics engineer Eric Unger, never mentioned these finished, coated items in plastic boxes.
