For you folks who have elephant, Mammoth or whatever type of ivory stocked sixguns..... do you shoot them with the ivory on them or swap out to less expensive grip sets for powder burning sessions? I have a couple with stag grips and I’m shoot them as is.

I just shoot them but the heaviest recoiling gun I have them on, that I've shot, is 45 colt

I shoot mine but I think 41 mag is my heaviest that wears ivory, not counting Colt SAA style Guns in 45 Colt. You ever seen the trees elephants rip out with their tusks?

Mike if it's the one in your avatar, congrats That's one of them. I now have one piece ivory on this USFA and have put a few miles on it with no issues.

I shoot with ivory. Ivory is very strong.
The material you have to really be careful with is mother-of-pearl. Shooting can crack those, for sure, especially if they are not perfectly fitted and tightened. I do NOT shoot guns while they have MOP stocks on them.

For heavy kickers wearing ivory do y'all think a round butt grip would be more foolproof?
I've got a Bisquero with Dustin Linebaugh that'll be a 4 3/4 500 Linebaugh with ivory grips and I'm thinking if I make a mistake and set the butt on a hard surface for a rest I'll regret it.

I HAVE BEEN SHOOTING A RUGER BISLEY 5 1/2 INCH NIMROD IN 475L WITH IVORIES ON IT, WITH NO APPARRENT ILL EFFECTS. I HAVE NOT SHOT IT WITH THE TOP END LOADS BUT HAVE FIRED A BUNCH OF 400gr+ BULLETS THAT ARE PROBABLY IN THE 1,100fps RANGE. FROM WHAY I HAVE READ, IVORY IS SUPPOSE TO BE PRETTY TUFF.

I shoot 'em. Stoutest loads are full house 45 Colt, H-110. No issues. Tim

No...and I agree with the NOT setting that on a hard surface and firing but I'm betting that Ivory may surprise you... No need to prove it.

Evidently you've never seen a picture of an elephant with a broken tusk or damaged craggy looking ends on his tusks. It does happen.

also... don't some ivory blanks have slight cracks, delamination or gaps between the layers... since I don't currently own any "actual" ivory, I'm not sure if they stabilize those or not??? as far as MOP... I have several sets of these, & have even taken a broken set, & fit them to a smaller grip frame gun... I'd suspect more of these were damaged from impact, or over tightening of the grip screw, than from recoil... but will admit, most of mine are like the picture in my avatar, & are mounted on antique guns, in calibers smaller than 45 Colt BTW... those of you that have posted pics... you have some incredibly beautyful guns... I've not joined the ivory club yet... but do have many MOP, several buffalo horn, a set of Rams horn, & a couple sets of bone... seems I'm missing something here
