Hi,
Newbie question. I saw this statement online:
".357 revolvers can shoot .38 special ammo with no issue you will just have to clean the carbon ring from inside the chamber after shooting a lot of .38 special as the case is a little shorter and the carbon buildup can make inserting .357 rounds more difficult
My question is: if I go to the range and shoot a box of 38sand then decide to shoot some 357s, will I run into problems with carbon build up after shooting a box of 38? I clean my gun after each trip to the rang, so cumulative build up should not be a problem. Is the above statement referring to shooting 357s after 38s, or firing 357s after shooting many38s over a period of time without cleaning the chambers?

All that was answered in the first round.

AdamARMIt shouldn't be a problem. Carbon ringing generally shouldn't build up that quickly.

I have NEVER had an issue and i typically shoot a thousand 38 Specials to one 357 magnum.

Hi... I have never had an issue with carbon build up in the cylinders of my .357Magnum revolvers. Then again... I never shoot .38Spl cartridges in my .357Mag revolvers. I have .38Spl revolvers for that.

I haven’t had any problems shooting .357’s after .38’s, but I have had carbon buildup quickly when shooting .32 S&W long in a .32HRM. So much that I could feel it scraping off. I clean all my guns after shooting. This happened after about 75rds.

If you are worried about the dreaded "carbon ring" just take a short cleaning rod and brush or a bore snake and run the tool through the cylinder once or twice after shooting 38s in your 357. I have fired thousands of 38 Specials in my 357 Magnums and only light loaded "target" 38 leave any debris, and 38 +Ps are fun...
