Oversized sight that requires fitting.

Well. The original idea i thought was to build a sight that didn’t float. THAT WOULD BE THE IDEAL. SO WOULD BE WINNING THAT 1000 DOLLARS EVERY DAY FOR LIFE. For rugged use. To accomplish that, it would have to be fitted. YES, IT WOULD HAVE TO BE FITTED AND ON SOME OF THE OLDER GUNS THAT WOULD TAKE ALOT OF FITTING BECAUSE THERE IS QUITE A BIT OF DIFFERENCE. I CAN SEE I AM GOING TO HAVE TO POST SOME PICTURES.
As far as the cuts on the frame, i prefer to mod the accessory. Not the gun. KEEP IN MIND, THE CURRENT SIGHT ONLY ALLOWS FOR ONE 6X48" SCREW. IF THAT IS WHAT EVERYBODY WANTS I WILL DO THAT BUT I CAN TELL YOU MY OWN GUNS WILL HAVE 2 SCREWS HOLDING THE SIGHT DOWN. Unless I’m going custom. Just to add a rear sight and nothing more i dont think I’d want the expense of milling the frame. MILLING THE FRAME IS THE ONLY WAY TO UNIFORM THE MORTISE THAT I CAN THINK OF. AND LIKE IT OR NOT, A FIXED REAR WILL ALMOST HAVE TO HAVE SOME SORT OF A SEMI ADJUSTABLE FRONT EVEN IF IT IS ONLY TO SIGHT IT IN AND THEN PIN IT IN PLACE. SO A DOVETAIL IN THE FACTORY BASE OR SOME OTHER DURABLE ARRANGEMENT WILL HAVE TO ALSO BE A PART OF THIS ACT.
I’m guessing these will be priced in the $100 range, I WOULD LIKE TO AVOID THAT. THERE IS NO REASON WE CANNOT USE OUR COMBINED BUYING POWER TO KEEP A ONE PIECE UNIT 35 PER OR SO. so add to that milling and fitting work, you are quickly at $200 I’d guess. WHEN YOU HAVE TO TEAR DOWN A SIXGUN AND FIXTURE IT INTO A MACHINE THE COST DOES GO UP SO WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE WE ARE FITTING A WORTHWHILE PART!! Would the required work be something the average Joe would pay for after spending $100 on a sight? THATS HARD TO SAY.
THIS IS GOING TO TAKE A BIT MORE THINKING....THANK YOU JOE S FOR YOUR INPUT. IT IS VALUED.

what about shimming then to the fixed position tacking the float out of them. SHIMS COULD WORK. HOWEVER YOU THEN ALSO HAVE TO TRAP THE SHIMS. A MEAN A$$ CURVED FLAT SPRING WOULD ALSO WORK AND ALLOW SOME FLEX LIKE A SHOCK ABSORBER. BUT AGAIN, ONE 6X48" SCREW? THE REASONABLE QUESTION HERE IS, "HAVE YOU EVER BROKEN THAT SCREW BEFORE?" WELL, OF COURSE, PROBABLY NOT BUT I WOULD POINT OUT THE CURRENT FACTORY SIGHT AND MOST OF THE REPLACEMENT AFTERMARKET UNITS WOULD GIVE FIRST WOULD BE THE ONLY REASON WHY.

I was taught to modify the cheaper of the part first I AGREE HERE AS WELL. IF WE MODIFY THE RECEIVER BY MILLING THE CHANNEL WE CAN'T BRING THE SIXGUN BACK TO FACTORY SPEC. IF WE DRILL AND TAP 2 HOLES IN THE MORTISE TO BETTER SECURE OUR NEW REAR UNIT WE AGAIN CAN'T BRING IT BACK TO FACTORY SPEC UNLESS WE LOCATE THOSE HOLES SO AS NOT TO INTERFERE WITH THE SPRING LOCATIONS IN THE ORIGINAL SIGHT SO WE CAN REINSTALL IT IF WE NEED TO. THERE'S ALSO WHAT TO DO WITH THE HORIZONTAL PIN HOLES IN THE RECIEVER. A COUPLE PINS WITH CAPS PERHAPS.... ANYWAY, THE IDEAL WOULD BE TO NOT MODIFY THE SIXGUN SO AS NOT TO BE ABLE TO MAKE IT BACK TO WHERE THE ORIGINAL PARTS WOULDN'T SERVE.

A Bowen-type rear sight picture, in a rugged fixed rear sight for under $50 is appealing to me. I grew up fitting parts in 1911's with a file, so fitting a rear sight to a mortise shouldn't be too difficult, and zeroing elevation by filing the top of front or rear sights is not too difficult either. Touch up reblue after filing is done. Sounds like a fun project for do-it-yourselfers.

Fit it then bed in 5 minutes epoxy then a single screw should be ok. Want to remove just warm/heat and remove and clean up the mess.

Fermin, I think a single 6-48 screw would be ok. I have a BFR 454 with a Delta Point Pro mounted with a single 6-32 screw through the base, which has held without problem for over 500 full house loads. The mount fit tight in the mortise and I used red loctite underneath it.

I’m leaning more to one screw right now, if the sight is fit to the mortise perfectly, holding it down with one, shouldn’t be an issue.

Ok, to bring this thread back up to speed I have a few more photos and thoughts. So the first thing I found out was the Ruger rear sight channel has significant variation from sixgun to sixgun. So, what I have done here is to take my project sixgun with the "smallest" mortise or channel and I am fitting a rear sight to it. Once I have this done, I can see how much undersize it will be in my newer Rugers with their more generous sight channels. As an aside, this is one of my personal pet projects as this Single Six was a gift from Big Rugged Rob Leahy and will in the end be a very unique sixgun. I also think I have decided how I am going to anchor this bad boy in place.
