...and none of them are boolit proof and they aren't hiding in the woods just waiting to jump out and eat the first human they can... Well of course not... You always let the point man go by before springing the ambush. :-P

Clarification as to what I meant by "overblown distortion". I just responded this in a pm to a member that asked...
The publics general impression is that bears are behind every bush waiting to eat people that dare to intrude in their domain. Drawings of bears with drooling jaws agape with fire in their eyes. All the books like Alaska Bear Tales, Night of the Grizzly and others that portray bears as monsters with an insatiable desire for human blood have created this overblown distortion.
Then there are the hundreds if not thousands of threads on internet forums.... "What's the best gun for bear protection". They usually end up in a testosterone filled pissing match between the 500 Smith and 10mm Glock guys. Or bear spray vs gun. No discussion usually about Bear Aware starting between the ears. That the overwhelming majority of bears don't want anything to do with humans and that the best defense is knowledge. Or that they have a greater chance of getting stomped by a moose than eaten by a bear.
Peoples impressions become their reality.

SnydBeing serious, of course you're right. Statistically you are more likely to get stomped by a moose, struck by lightning, or any number of things, than attacked by a bear. Bear is a primal force in most folks imagination though. It's the most fearsome predator most folks in North America are likely to ever encounter and so sparks discussion. Even on a relatively anti-gun site I participate on, bear talk pops up periodically and always spurs long threads. Still, whether angry ruminant ( the moose does not want a selfie with you!), whomping big static discharge ( get indoors if possible!), or territorial ursine omnivore, etc, your best defense is situational awareness and while it shouldn't have to be stated it often does need stated. You aren't off base.
