The friends of ours from Oregon who are house sitting at their kids house in Palmer invited us to come see them while they were there. They went fishing with us yesterday and it was sad to see how scared and freaked out the wife was to even be walking in a group with a couple of the people armed. She had bells on her back pack and a can of bear spray and I started to tease her about watching for bear piles that had bells in it and smelled like bear spray but luckily I held off. City folks have no concept that it is okay to not be the biggest critter in the woods nor do they embrace the how being out in nature like that makes for a richer experience. They simply live in fear of what they are not used to.

She was not afraid of the firearms especially since she wasn’t even aware if how many were being worn. She just kept playing the Eagle River scenario over and over in her mind since Eagle River is just 25 miles away and where they attend church. Explaining the odds of anything happening didn’t reach through her fear especially when the young man who took us and who is a friend of theirs just matter of factly told us that we would most likely see a bear or two down in the river. Not trying to scare her but stating a fact for that part of the river during this busy fishing season.

Ya, that's too bad . If she goes to church, she needs to work on her faith that God will take care of her !!!! And He might use some guy totin a rosco to do it if need be. :-) I seem to encounter too many of the other type. That think bears and moose Want some idiot to walk right up to them so they can get a selfy.

Brainwashing works, just ask Goebels. A gun is a tool, a very useful tool. If she is so scared of bears, guns and whatever else she should stay the hell in "safe" Oregon. The story of the gal up by Chena that broke her walking stick on a black bear head and sprayed it with insect repellent and won. Says she wanted a gun and that bear needed killing. Hope she purchased a pistol that day and learns to use it.

Very true. Too many people form a dislike & fear of guns because of poor publicity always focused around the negatives... rarely (to never) is there any publicity about the positives around firearms. That's the biggest thing going against firearms (anywhere & everywhere) Misconception.
More do need to realize that guns have their place and purpose no different than a hammer & fence-tightener do.. or table saw, screwdriver, paint-brush; whatever. Have to choose the right tool for the job depending on the job at hand. Simple as that.
(OP) Betcha if a Bear had shown itself of that-trip, the lady would have been the first one stuck to your ass like glue for the very fact you-had those guns! Tables & opinions turn quick when fear from the other direction rears its head and what (the nay-sayers) have along for protection is realized insufficient (or flat out just fails)

Fear, and lack of knowledge combined with way too much YouTube, FB and othe social media coverage and opinions, is really funny to see first hand. I get lots of folks scared and preoccupied with “looking” for snakes instead of actually looking for game down here in S. Texas. Some even go so far as to let me know that they are carrying a special gun just for snakes, my response is typically informing them that if they kill or harass the big black snakes, (blue indigos) they will promptly be asked to leave and no refund given. So please ensure what you are shooting is indeed a rattlesnake.
It’s like they think they’re everywhere and out to get you.

I tended to get plenty of urban Alaskans out where I used to live in Southeast Alaska that were terrified of brown bear. Especially Juneau ite's. Seems almost every fall some deer hunter out of Juneau gets mauled on Admiralty Island. And everyone gets exspecially bearanoid. Problem is, they don't know what and when to look, listen and smell for. So they are just generally bearanoid and armed. Many without enough training or skill with the guns they are totin. Alaska is in a sense, its own place in regards to hunting and guns. Not Africa or lower 48 or Europe. We get dummy's that put their rifle in some kind of Eberlstock rifle back pack, because someone on a tv show did it that way. That way when they "bump" a bear their screwed as far as getting their rifle into action in a timely manner. Then there's the knuckle heads that when they get a ruminate on the ground , do everything shy of using a #/€£$& gun lock to make sure their rifle can't run around shootin the place up , all by itself. When I get meat on the ground , my rifle is topped back off , chambered and safed! And always within easy reach. But then I mostly hunt with M77 Mk2 Ruger's. When they are on full safe, their safe. And I pack my rifle in my hands when I'm packin meat. Not bearanoid, just very experienced. If I was a 500 S+W guy, I would forgo packin the rifle when packin meat. I'm not, so I pack my rifle.

Think we again have a bear in the 'hood. Two nights ago while walking the dog at midnight after work had yet to clear far property line when we heard a horrible noise. We have those big roll cart, push cart garbage bins that hold 6 bags or so of garbage, around here. Raccoons and such need not apply. Well, the noise sounded like someone or three had picked up a garbage tote s and thrown it against the side of house or garage and then stomped a few times too. In the quiet of a summer eve, was kinda shocking and dog and me whirled to face noise. Sounded like the house beyond mine, across the ravine and thru the woods. Am, what the bleep is he doing ? before I could walk back to sure it wasn't my garbage, he rolls down the road and turns into his driveway, not him. So I hit the tacticool light and am looking around either side of my garage, from the road and hear something cross thru my back woods along the river, plowing brush. Dog walking is fun again !

I enjoy these exchanges.
Sadly,,, too many city types have nothing more than an education by Disney. And they THINK they are the top of the food chain & nothing will bother them. OR,,, or,, they step out of their city, & urban environment and automatically think that bears, snakes, & other "monsters" will be hunting them.
Basically,, they lack common sense.
As I was reading the above response by jt,,, I reflected upon the newspaper shooting & the one reporter hiding, and saying he could hear the guy reloading. And how helpless he felt.
When faced with anything,, man or beast,, intent upon causing you destruction or death,,, most primal instincts kick in, and you WANT to hide or fight back if hiding doesn't work. Without the proper tools,, hiding & hoping you aren't discovered is your only option.
A proper tool for the proper job. And often,, different tools to make sure the job gets done safely.

Yup,dog walking will now require swapping the Bulldog outta the holster and dropping the M69 in. Just in from taking the dog around the mowed portions of the 3 acres and no reaction from her, so figure the bear stayed in the woods as it crossed thru the property.

Sometimes the best tool can be between your ears... and if you dont train with that tool... it can become the most dangerous of tools

We have had a lot of hot sun and rain. It melts the glaciers and the rivers are up to full bank height. It makes it hard for the bears to fish and the dominate bears get the spots where fish can be caught. Plus the salmon runs are not good this summer so far. So, there are bears showing up around dumpsters and trash cans . Since I'm the garbage man I get to be where they are or were. Sometimes I hear some brush moving and things in the brush behind a dumpster. Which with the sound of the truck and not having the greatest hearing means the bear isn't far away. Just how it is in a situation like we have this summer.

You probably shouldn't answer, but I would hope your armed as you go about work. I was forbidden to carry at work as they said Bear spray is the answer. I really like my LC9 with 147s. Really happy to be retired......
