So, he says it's a XR3-RED but I don't see the markings on it..... I need to be sure it's a XR N-3RED I'll check the locator pin placement later.....

Bushog, I just went and checked on my spare (no it's not for sale) it has a very faint marking of XR-3 and original s/n of the gun. As far as I know that has been the same on my other XR3-Red steel frames. Just pulled the grips on two more and verified XR-3 markings only. I had to use a five power glass to see the marking on mine. Its on the r/h side rear of grip frame just behind the strut location. The one on ebay is a Ruger part and you can see the original gun s/n on it.

Hmmm, well it's my understanding that the 72-73 XRN-3RED grip frame is the same dimension wise as the 62-63 XR3-RED only reconfigured for the New Model action parts...I found that eBay listing a few days ago on my daily gun parts search and I also believe it to be a genuine Ruger part because of the partial serial # electro penciled inside, & because it also appears to be factory finished as well.

Greg,
to my eyes it's an XRN-3RED. the shape it right, it's steel and it has the pin holes for the new model trigger return spring.

I think you guys are right.
I checked the pin locator holes and they're in the right place.
Bullseye, you're correct. I looked at the wonderful chart on Gunblast too!
Difference IS that the grip locator hole is in a different place.
I've got both in frames alloy and the older one won't fit the grips that are fueling this quest.....
