Hogue has a new grip available for the Round Butt Redhawks like my Kodiak Backpacker.
Round Butt Frames
The factory wood panels, while really good looking and well fitted just were not working for me. They pinched a nerve in my thumb and caused me excruciating pain with hot loads.
I tried two Pachmayer grips, the Presentation and the Gripper Decelerator (an even softer version of the original Gripper). They were both designed for the original Redhawk frame, but fit the round butt frame well.
I spotted the new grip on Hogue's site last week and ordered one. It arrived Friday and I put it on Sunday. I went to an indoor range today to give it a quick try. I shot 40 rounds of 240 gr Hornady XTP's with a book max load of Win 296 pushing them. I had no discomfort and wish I had more ammo along.
The grip feels like it was molded for my hand, which might be bad for other people, as I have never felt that way about Hogue or Pachmayer grips with finger groves (even though I really like several of them).
The grip is shorter than the Pachmayer Gripper, about the length of a Presentation grip. It is about as wide as the Gripper, but not contoured like the Gripper. It also point shoots really well for me.
The Hogue has more rubber under the thumb than the Gripper did. It feels at least as comfortable in recoil.
Another plus, It has a cut out on the bottom so the serial number is visible, unlike either Pachmayer grip.
Looks wise it is Ugly. Really ugly. I like the looks of either Pachmayer grip better, and the factory wood panels were really good looking and fit perfectly. But they pinched a nerve in my thumb so bad they HAD to go.
I carried the Kodiak in an IWB holster most of the day yesterday (even on a 14 mile bike ride) and all day today with shorts and a T shirt and it was really comfortable (as it has always been) and really concealable with the grip size and shape.
So while the Hogue is a toad complete with warts and all in the looks department, in the form follows function dept. they are a Big Winner for me.
In pictures this grip on the Kodiak almost looks almost like an SP101, though NOBODY would confuse it for one in person.
Pics or it didn't happen, even though I broke every photography rule taking shots outside at noon on a sunny day:
