Picked up S&W 69 and 57 this afternoon. The 57 (no dash) looks unfired, but has spots of rust.   . |

Doug, is the 57 a N prefix gun or an S prefix gun? N670xxx, Robb. Wide, serrated target trigger. Beautiful, nearly black bluing. I was bummed over missing an OM Ruger BH, 4-5/8" for $575 Buy It Now, so I looked at S&W 57's and 58's and this was about the only one I could afford. People are asking more for a nice 58 than they are for some 57's... |

Doug, I guess I better not tell you about the old model 41 mag 4 5/8" that I'll be sticking on the RF soon! No surprises on the 58 prices. They have skyrocketed over the last year or so. Them and the model 520 which is the same gun in 357 are the two older N frame fixed sided 4" revolvers S & W made in the not too distant past and they bring a premium.

Congrats on your acquisitions -- must have put a good sized dent in your "foxy pocket*".
One of my few regrets was selling the twin to your M57. Bought it in the early 80s from a neighbor and shot it quite a bit with commercial 210gr SWCBBs and Green Dot. Don't remember shooting any magnum loads, but knowing me, I'm sure I did. It was a time in my life when a sale was required if I wanted something else.
* Foxy pocket -- secret stash of funds squirreled away over a period of time (for gun money or ?)-- I had to ask when I first heard the phrase.

Many folks like the S prefix guns just because they are earlier guns. The 57 first came out with actual Smith & Wesson coke style target grips the first year and these rank pretty high on the collectors list. When I look for 57s or 58s I look for S prefix guns but that is just me.

Congrats on a good haul. Back in the mid 90's I had 2 cased S-prefix first year production Model 57's, one 4" & one 6"...They were gorgeous revolvers with Coke bottle grips & the phenomenally beautiful high polish black/blueing S&W's of the pre Bangor Punta era featured...Unfortunately, they both went down the road during my VERY expensive Luger P-08 collecting phase. I couldn't replace them today for 4-5 times what I paid for them originally...I did manage to hold on to my pet Ivory stocked 4" S-prefix Model 57, this one will never leave me during my lifetime.  |

I bought a like new, used one for $100 in 1967, new they were $165! It was a 4" gun & I shot up half of Texas with it. Mine was the very rare "D" series. The D stands for DEAD! Everything I shot at was dead.

Beautiful...looks like that one is around 1979/80 vintage just before Smith dropped the pinned barrels and recessed chambers... I have two 1980 vintage 4", one blue and one nickel Class A engraved...
The "S" prefix 57s are my favorite of all Smiths... Have a 4", 5" 6" and 8 3/8"s all from 1964. The blue and polish of the premium Smiths from about 1956 to 1968 is just so much more stunning than any other era.
