A friend just picked up a used 44mag Winchester. All I know at this point. Do the Winchesters run large of bore like the Marlins ? Is twist rate flexible or do they favor light or heavy bullets ? Stuff I need to know to help him load. heading to the library downthe hall to access Taffin's book on 44's..

Depends when it was made.... they ran the gamut in sizes. Mine has a 1:20 twist abd is on the smaller side.

Not sure if this helps, but in case the library doesn't have it handy, the book of the 44 is available online: sixguns.com/BookOfThe44/

"Library" my joke, that book resides in my bathroom. Appears John had good luck with Hornady products. My young friend however wants suitable bullets for Penn bears. Big bears, flushed from laurel jungles and to be shot from any angle. Sooo.. "bear bullets" in 44 to be used in a levergun length barrel and safe in feed tube magazines ? The 265gr Hornady ? The 270gr FP SP . The Barnes Buster ? Sent him info, links to CEB and Lehigh too. Again, has to be safe, and feed in a levergun with tubular magazine. Thanks.

For punch and going in cold with the .44 Mag, I would pick the Nosler 300 JHP over the Hornady 265 FP. Both are very accuracy revolver bullets, with 296/H110 a good powder. I use mag primers. The Nosler JHP looks a lot like the old, pre-XTP Hornady JHP, and shares the pure lead core. David Bradshaw
