Am going thru reloading stuff, brass, etc., of a friend. Have several boxes of now empty brass, 303 Savage. No such critter in any of my loading manuals going back to early '80's. School me..

The 303 Savage is very much like the 30-30. It was an early offering in the 99. It used .308" bullets usually 190 grains.

I think it was quite popular in Canada. A very close friend used a Savage 99 in 303 Savage to hunt moose in Northern B.C. in the 70s. It did a fine job. One of the bulls he got was over 50" He is a Canadian. Back then the 32 Special Winchester ( one of my brothers has had and hunted a 32 Special for around 40 + years) . And the 32 Remington were actually rather popular. Savage always had their own carts chambered in their rifles. Until they started clambering the Winchester carts.

Use 30-30 data for reloading. As usual, start lower and work up. The 303 Savage is completely different from the 303 British. 303 Savage uses .308 bullets Ron

The 303 British, is head and shoulders above the Savage offering. In a good rifle it is 308 equivalent.

If you google "303 Savage in a 303 British" and look at the images you will see how different the two rounds are.303 Savage will fire in a 303 British chamber ,a 40 S&W will also fire in a 45 ACP revolver but it is not advised!

Going thru some old posts and saw this. I am 58 years old now, I killed my first deer as a teenager, with a Ruger 44 Carbine. It was a little forkhorn and I shot it broadside, right thru the very center of the deer, center him up and down and front to back, that’s where I hit it.
One of my elderly relatives was along on the hunt. He carried a Savage 99 that was ancient even then, fore end held in place with electrical tape and a penny under the rear sight to replace a lost sight elevator. It was a .303, the only one I’ve ever seen. He looked at my deer on the tailgate of the pickup, spit a long stream of tobacco juice and said .... “Plumb near missed him, didn’t ya boy?”

I HAVE LOADED FOR THE 303 SAVAGE. USED 30-30 BULLETS AND EQUALED 30-30 VELOCITIES. MY SAVAGE TAKE DOWN, CIRCA 1927, SHOT VERY WELL WITH THE HANDLOADS. I THINK I GOT MY BRASS FROM HUNTINGTON. LATER HORNADY MADE A RUN OF 303 SAVAGE AMMO, I BOUGHT SOME BUT HAVE NEVER TRIED IT. I AM A HANDGUN HUNTER AND RARELY SHOOT RIFLES BUT I GOT ON A SAVAGE 99 KICK YEARS BACK, EVEN SHOT A BIG HOG WITH A 99 IN 22 SAVAGE HIGH POWER.
