Little buggers have neen trying to move into the house... chewed through the vinyl siding been "habitrailing" through the pink foam insulation across the wall, and then chewed through the wood ( I've heard them inside the wall ) so this means war... I've had the lil 17 mach 2 leaning against the wall, but admittedly these are the "crackheads" of the forest, and they almost never stand still... so I also incorporated a Czech folding single shot .410, that I custom fit to my wife ( pretty small for me ) which is what I used today, to shoot a female only 10 ft from the house... not sure if she is the invader or not... but there are plenty of trees further away from the house to habitat in....
Outside doggie was happy

Just shot another one (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) off the side of my cabin too. They're on the upswing and going to be a big year here. Fortunately I'm stocked up on CCI .22 CB Long.

It sure does count, at least with me. They are shot on sight at camp due to the damage done.

I had a squirrel set up housekeeping in my attic once and the wife wanted it removed post haste. I looked at its means of ingress and decided it was using the top of a privacy fence to gain access to the place on the house he used to go to the attic. I put a have-a-heart trap on the top fence runner and wired the door open. I didn't bother to put bate in it because it was a squirrel. They tend to squirrel away food in or near their nests. But he had to come outside for water. So a nice little bowl of water was place in the trap and refilled daily. After three days I unwired the door and set its trigger. The next morning I had one mad squirrel. He ran around that trap and yanked mightily at the door, but he was caught. I loaded him in the truck and took him off to squirrel heaven.

Rocky Mtn. high country. Slipping around, using all the Dan'l Boone tricks I knew, looking for an Elk or Mule Deer. Hole up for a bit, hiding, being as quiet as I could, & here comes Mr. Pine Squirrel raising more hell than any keg party I've ever been too. I'm busted, just as well leave & find another spot for an ambush. Plus, the rodent is starting to work on my sanity, wouldn't shut up for a second, & was throwing stuff at me. Getting settled in an other good spot, over looking a creek bottom or a park, & here comes another one of those barking little SOB's. I don't think I've ever seen a critter that excitable. Sanity gone, the total serenity of the high country gone, the safety is flicked on the 7 Mag. Put crosshair on beady, wild looking eye, raise crosshair to allow for distance to bore, burn nearly 70 grains of powder & send a Nosler partition to an 8 oz. varmint. Well, there went any chance of hunting this area for the rest of the day but at least there's meat for supper. Wrong.... taste like a greasy pine cone.

In the same Croc Pot of stew with porcupine, you can tell them apart. The porky tastes better..

They are generally cat food around here... I toss them into the cat food dish most of the time... figuring if the cats would get used to eating them, maybe they would catch a few???

Those things are really nuisances. I shoot them and chipmunks any chance I get. I'm glad you noticed that they almost never seem to stop moving long enough to get a shot off. Countless times I've seen one go across my entire field of view and never stop.

Got another from the patio door to the biggest mature walnut tree in the front yard, this evening... as I was looking at all the little bits of pink foam insulation scattered across the front yard... the lil 17 Mach 2... and a difficult shot, but dropped one from about 3/4 of the way up the tree... didn't sex that one... just called the doggie so I didn't have to pull my boots on, and trudge out onto the spring snow

Not my pic. (It borrowed from the internet). I shoot lots of things with a camera, but tree rats isn't one of them.
