I've long been in search of the appropriate .44 carbine to accompany my various .44 handguns. I believe my preference is an early JM Marlin, followed closely by the Ruger M77. However, I've yet to consider the steel Henry Big Boy. I've noticed several for sale on both the used and new market and have considered offering a $700-$800 trade but lacking any experience with that particular rifle I've been hesitant. Needless to say, I am interested in the opinions of anyone who has owned and used one.

Lack of loading gate and weight are what kept me from buying the Henry. Also, wanted a historical design. I'm sure the Henry is a nice gun though. Ended up finding a NIB Winchester 94 Trapper and love it.

Most of the problem is the slow twist in most 44 rifles..... not insurmountable, but a pain sometimes. As far as 44 Mag rifles, a Marlin on the 336 action is preferable to the 1894 (I've had three bi-centennial ones). A Remington 788 in 44 Mag is a nice shooter also. The Winchester trappers are nice rifles... don't have one in 44 though. I have the Ruger M77 also, same slow twist problem for lighter loads... heavy loads not so much of a problem. Look for a faster twist, somewhere around a turn in 20 inches instead of a turn in 38 inches.

I have the Henry Mares Leg in 44mag and its a well built gun. The first lever actions did not have a loading gate. Loading into the tube is easy and it doesn't smear the tip of lead bullets like a loading gate can. Henry steel rifles are lighter than the brass ones. Buds Guns has about the best prices on them

I've got the steel .41Mag carbine & love it. Slick action, nice trigger, nice wood & excellent fit & finish. Really nice gun & growing up with tube-fed Marlin .22s, the lack of a loading gate is a non-issue. Henry's supposed to be a very stand-up company that stands behind its products.
