I have a three screw blackhawk I'm looking to do something with. I was thinking of a 41 special as I'm a big 41 fan but was wondering if this really accomplishes anything you can't just as easily do with a downloaded 41 mag? Thanks.

Go with the Magnum and download as needed......3-Screws can handle the round. Now the Special is a perfect fit for say a Colt or a clone. -Lee www.singleactions.com

I guess it is a question of what you intend with the piece. If it is to load to 41 Special ballistics than go for a 41 Special. If there is a chance you desire 41 Mag ballistics than go with the 41 Mag and load as appropriate. Do note that the rechambered factory 357 Mag cylinder will not allow some of the heavies to be utilized. Again, depends what you are after. My $.02...

I agree with Lee on the 41 mag. It's not like your going into a gun that can only handle the 41 special. There is no weight advantage by not going to the magnum. One other thing is you can find 41 mag. ammo alot easier than 41 spl. if needed.

All depends on what you want it for. I have 3 screw 357 conversions to 41 Special and 41 Mag and love them both. That said, I also am having a 41 Special built right now on an OM 357 Flat top just to be different. Sure I could load 41 mag brass down or shoot my Special brass in it but then it wouldn't be a worthlessly neat to me. Practicality wise, go with the 41 Mag, weird 41 cultwise, dedicated 41 Special I say.

Mine will have both cylinders! Mag and Special. JRH took delivery of the base gun today, in fact.

If your going to use a blackhawk, I'd go 41 mag. You can always down load it to 41 spl. specs. Bill

I sent an Old Model to Dave Clements to be converted to a .41 Special. I have a Smith Model 57 (well, 2 actually:4 inch and a sixer) but wanted something a bit easier to pack. I am in search of the Perfect Packing Pistol and this is one more step. Besides, it is a waaaaay cool cartridge, kinda for those times in the woods where I want a little something, but I am not really expecting to repel boarders. It's unique too, kinda like my .375 and 6.5 JDJ's. There are other more practical rounds, meaning you can go to the corner gun store for more, but the CDI factor isn't as high on those either.

I agree, that it depends what you want. I have a shelf full of .41's and they are exclusively "standard" or "heavy", mainly depending on the model.
While I have developed lighter / special loads in the magnum case I never really have seen the purpose, and the hassle of resighting wasn't worth it to me.
I take delivery this week on my Bowen .41 Special built on a 686 Mountain Gun. This is a platform where I think the Special can really shine.
I have a .357 Anniversary Blackhawk, and I struggle whether to convert it to .41 Mag or .44 Special.
It's a fun decision process though.

I'm waiting patiently for a .41 Special to be completed, and I think it should be a cartridge that will do about anything I'd like a revolver to do. PROBABLY the OM .357 frame could handle the .41 Magnum cartridge at its usual loadings but I chose not to investigate this power level; I have a large-frame Blackhawk that chambers the magnum round already. Now, chambering the revolver for the .401 Herter's PowerMag might be fun!

MadBadger I was working on that same decision myself, then Ruger came out with the midframe 44's and the skies opened and light shone down, and a great voice spoke unto me, "you can have both"

Aggie01 Of course, how'd I overlook that? Hhmm, that opens the door again for the .50 GI conversion.......Wheeee! Oops, sorry didn't mean to threadjack. IMHO, the .41 Special makes most sense in guns where the Magnum version is simply not an option. MadBadger

I got a .41 Mag OM and only load 220 gr. over 7 gr. Unique. I have other guns if I need more gun. If this was my only gun it could handle what I shoot in my Contender carbine.

My 41 Special is very special to me, built by Reeder on a 3 screw Ruger, 3 3/4 in bbl, likes 13.0 gr 4227 and 210 gr lee bullets. Great walking around gun.
