Now that I can reliably load quality .44 Colt (original) It's time for a new project. I recently laid hands on an old Pietta .44 Remington cap-and-ball cylinder, so tonight its transformation began. First things first- drill through the cylinders and ream them to .455"- ![](https://i.imgur.com/qtWX89I.jpg) Next chuck it up in the metal lathe and turn down the back, leaving the ratchet to protrude through the breech-plate- ![](https://i.imgur.com/cb2G42C.jpg) Last- clean up the surface and make sure the cartridges fit properly. No, those are not .44 Magnum rounds; the brass has been shortened and the rim turned down to make .44 Colt brass. ![](https://i.imgur.com/ttsOwIg.jpg) The next step will be making the breech-plate with a pass-through for loading and unloading. I plan on attaching this to the frame of the gun if I can manage that and still have a removable cylinder- and I'm pretty sure that I can.

Rough finish, is that from the interrupted cut? Or is it the cylinder alloy? Jeff

Rough finish, is that from the interrupted cut? Or is it the cylinder alloy? Jeff It's the cutter I'm using and probably lack of experience. I will finish it fully before I am done.
