Interesting "little gun." 629-4, 44 Magnum, called the "Backpacker" by S&W on account of its 3" barrel. Should be "fun" to shoot

I know right off it wouldn't be very fun for me to shoot with those grips on it. But with a rubber grip it would be a blast !

I know right off it wouldn't be very fun for me to shoot with those grips on it. But with a rubber grip it would be a blast ! ***** I think S&W markets the the snubnose .44 Mag with wood stocks for sex appeal, and markets the aluminum frame M-329 with wood stocks to promote a 25-ounce .44 Magnum. A 3-inch .44 cannot replace my 4-inch Model 29, nor can an aluminum .44 Magnum of any barrel length. The chronicle of TIME, CONSERVATION of ANATOMY, and MARKSMANSHIP favor the original Model 29 and its unadulterated descendants. I would take the 3-inch M-629 over any aluminum .44. The hard cold in which we’ve been shooting makes skin and joints mush less elastic, the hand less able to absorb shock, making a rubber grip which covers the backstrap especially kind to the base of the thumb, even when wood is preferred in summer. Those who think the only solution to recoil is one or another single action grip may not appreciate the shooting qualities of a good double action. The century old Smith & Wesson remains a benchmark of extreme reliability under adversity. David Bradshaw

That Backpacker is a sweetheart of a 44. A friend of mine has one and will not part with it no matter what I try to ply him with. Carried a 29-2 4" as a Deputy Sheriff in Northern Idaho for ten years and found out that cold weather recoil is different than warm weather recoil. Carried the old Remington 44 Mag load that was a 240 flat nose at a 1,000fps and it always served me well.
Enjoy that Backpacker it is a handy 44. If you sell the grips let me know!

I’ve got a 3”629 with the full underlug, it’s plenty accurate and fun to shoot with 240’s at 1000-1100fps, not so much with 300’s but not terrible either. I much prefer the boot grips for everyday carry, but my fiancé likes the longer Michulek grips. Prior to getting my Sheriff sized Bisleys it was my favorite woods walking gun.
You should enjoy it........

I want one of those backpackers pretty bad. I don't know why though, I already have a 69 for outdoors carry. It's just such a nice looking gun. I wish I knew how many they made so I could try to get a feel for the scarcity. I've never seen one and if I pass on the first one I ever do see will I get another chance? Horrible thing to have to think about

I've got one of the original 1986 vintage guns in .41 Magnum. Have had four over the years but the one I kept had been carried quite a bit and the previous owner had it Mag-Na-Ported.
No reason to really push velocities with these guns. I usually use a 210-220 Keith at 900-1150 fps or a 160-180 MeHic cast at 1300. Neither load is unpleasant even with wood grips.
For the 629 .44 3" the perfect defensive load "was" the Speer .44 Magnum 200 grain Gold Dot Short Barrel Load. It ran a 200 grain .44 Special DEEP HP at 1080 from a 4" barrel. The load has been discontinued but the reloading information is in the Speer #14 Manual. The 200 grain GD will open up very well at 1000+ fps.
Have fun with the gun...Bob

A comforting weight, on hip or in pocket. Nicely paired with a Randall ! Classy. Varmints of any number of legs beware.

Myself, well known here, have a CA Bulldog onboard in the am.. In cold weather, dressed for the day, have the M69 4.2" 44mag on hip now. The short barrel, large bore a niche I'm fond of.

They make a great companion to any handgun, but I especially like to combo them with my S&W when I am out in the woods or bumming around the ranch.....
