One of my 2018 goals is to shoot more, including my Single Seven and my 32 mag Single Six. I've recently ordered the Miha 100 g, 115 gr, and 135 gr molds. I'm totally new to casting, and just started reloading recently too. But I'm hooked. In 2018, I'd like to cast, load, and shoot these 32 cals and learn along the way.
Which brings me to my question for the rifle section. I have a T/C SS Contender (pre "G2") that currently wears an MGM 22 Hornet barrel. I really like my MGM tack driver. MGM has listed on their site both 32 Mag and 327 Mag chambering with .311 barrels. I like the idea of the .311 over .308...as I'd be wanting to shoot my new Miha cast bullets instead of the much wider variety of .308 bullets available.
As a final twist...I'm thinking about a suppressor. In the spirit of the ongoing hearing protection thread, if I want to shoot more than ever, protecting my hearing is a consideration (I've always had better than average hearing!) I have ZERO experience with suppressors! I realize this can become a very opinionated rabbit hole of brands and options.
My question for you guys...what are your thoughts on the MGM .311 barrels for the 32/327? Given the option of 32 or 327, which chambering do you recommend if I want the diet the be mostly cast from my 100, 115, and maybe 135s cast bullets?
Any experiences suppressing a contender?
I have much to learn...as is likely obvious!
Mike

So glad you asked...
Right after the 327 Federal came out, I got MGM to build me at 22" carbine barrel for my Contender.
That was before they added the "Premium" for the .311" bore.
The gun is light and accurate. Best described as a rimmed 30 Carbine.
If you take this route, you won't regret it. You can even shoot the spitzers made for the 7.62x39.
The Henry Steel lever gun is another great option.

Encore64...that's encouaging news! I do love my Contender setup as a carbine for those same reasons! It is relatively short and light and handles well.
Are there any thoughts out there for minimium carbine barrel lengths for the 32/327? I was leaning toward 18", threaded for suppressor.

With the small powder capacity and high pressure, a longer barrel doesn't offer much. I went 22" just to get the muzzle blast farther from my ears when hunting.

What's your impression of the infamous 327 muzzle blast out of that longer barrel?
Have you tried shooting 32 Mags out of the 327 chamber?

No, only 327 Federal. The small powder charge has completely burned by time it exits the muzzle. Not bad at all in a rifle.

Any thoughts about jacketed vs cast bullets out of the MGM 327 Federal chamber?

I have really been thinking about an MGM .327 contender barrel about 14" long. I just can't seem to go through with it though.

I'd like a matching 12" tapered barrel. But now they charge a premium for .311" bore stock. I shouldn't let it, but it irks me.

Hi Mike, my memory isn't all it ought to be, so if I already mentioned this, forgive me, but on the suppressor you need to consider that the bullet lube will exit the muzzle along with your cast bullet and sling off into the innards of your can. So, periodically you might need to clean that goo out of your can with some really hot solution or even boiling it in a pan of water ought to do it. Something to think about because shooting that thing is probably going to be as much fun as sitting at a slot machine with a wheel barrel full of quarters.

Fermin...I'm thinking the same thing about a 327 Contender carbine...should be fun for sure.
For those with more knowledge than me:
1) Thoughts on brands of suppressors that would work well on a Contender? To Fermin's point...need of cleaning with cast bullets? Would this be a good reason to learn to powder coat?
2) Any experience with gas checks through a suppressor? There's plenty of advice on other forums recommending NOT to shoot gas checked bullets through a suppressor for fear of the GC coming loose in the can, causing damage. However...I can't find any evidence of this actually ever happening. Urban legend?

I'd try the powder coat myself, or even thinned out liquid alox. Although the alox can be really smokey.
