Have the 4.2" A.S. model in both 327 Federal and 357 Magnum. Top quality and hard to imagine a better trail gun.

I also have one in 357 and 327. I got it by the way of having a Single 7 that the factory decided was unfixable, couldn't load two chambers, so never got to shoot that one. The replacement had a hole the casting and it felt pretty big when you stuck a wire in it to see. Sent it in, and Ruger said it was an unsafe condition, and asked what I wanted to do. They gave me the SP101 in exchange. I have to say it has been a good gun. It gets shot a lot, and seems to like heavy bullets best. The 100 gr do not do so good when shot at high speed. Keep these at around 1000 fps they are OK. I like the SP101 platform. I just picked up the new GP in 327. Haven't shot it yet

I picked up a 4” model last weekend. No range time yet but it hangs well in my hand and feels solid.

I am an old fart on this one. I had a bad experience and I can't get past it.
I bought a new SP101 and was of course not allowed to dry fire. When I got it home it had well over 14 lb double action pull and was gritty as hell. Single action was around 7 or 8. It was the worse trigger I ever touched. The fit and finish was horrible. Sharp edges everywhere.
I called Ruger and said I would like to have you guys take a look. They said that was within specs and would not take it. I then turned to a request for an action job that I would pay for. I was told with nasty tone that the SP101 was within specs and they refused to accept my money to have it done.
I have many many Rugers and live in Prescott, AZ where they make them. This was the worst experience ever with Ruger customer support. The net is filled with stories about that SP101 trigger and Ruger's refusal to acknowledge it.
Then I read on here, from folks I have a lot of respect for, that their SP101 is a beauty. Go figure. My SP101 took me hours and hours and hours to get right. It seemed trickier and more sensitive than any GP100. Poop happens.

oddshooter I wouldn't say the triggers on mine are great. Even after working on them, they will not be a GP or Smith trigger. But they are fairly decent and useable. I think it is because of the geometry of the components that it hurts the SP101 trigger. One of the biggest things I have found, when replacing springs is to make sure that the hammer strut (I think that is what it is called, The strut in the handle that the spring goes on and goes into the hammer), make sure that is polished. It is a stamped piece and is usually very rough where the spring compresses, and also the round end that goes in the hammer. The SP101 beats the others for carry ability. That's where it shines

The best thing about the SP101 in my opinion is the cylinder length. It is long enough to handle the .400" crimp to nose length of the 32 Sixgun Sledgehammer 135 grain HP. The Single Seven on the other hand requires that bullet to be deep seated. The 4" SP101 pushed the 135 grainer at 1200 fps over my chrono with no pressure signs. I wonder if they will make one with a longer barrel....?

As mentioned before...a great trail gun and cylinder length gives you a lot of options. But...even with aftermarket grips is way too small for my hands. I picked up the GP100 327 from Lipsey's a couple of weeks ago so just today gave my SP101 to an old friend. It fits him very well.

The trigger pull on my sp101 .327 with 4.2" barrel doesn't compare to the factory trigger pull on my sw 69; but it isn't horrible. I got lucky on the 69 and it is perfect. I'm thinking the sp101 will be pretty good with a bit of polishing, new springs and maybe a shim or two. Going to put a Hogue grip on it too. Handy size revolver and I'd buy it again.

I have both the 327 and 22LR in the 4.2, like everything about them except the factory grips, too small. Both now wear the Hogues which fit my hand well. Triggers on both are good now after spring changes and sear/hammer clean-up, no FTF.

I had a newer style 327 with the 4.2" barrel. It was okay to shoot but very particular about loads. For some reason I couldn't come to terms with barrel length and hi-viz front sight. To me it felt like the frame didn't match the barrel and the tall front sight meant it wasn't going to fit any normal holster. I wanted a long barrel for shooting or small frame for carrying.
I finally gave up and traded off the SP-101 4.2". I didn't want to give up on the 327 that just wasn't the right gun. Last month when I found out Ruger re-released the SP-101 3" 327 I ordered one right away. I have it here but I haven't had the time or the right weather to shoot it yet. It's much more along the lines of what I was looking for.

But, you completely point out the need to try before you buy and the lack of universal application. Good luck with your new gun.

I had one and I really liked it green glow front sight and all. But I heard some rumor of Dick Thompson playing Tunnel Rat getting after some overweight Badger and figured he needed it worse than me and sent it up there to him. It was minute of Badger in my hands! This is some work with the Sledgehammer at 25 yards. Velocity was 1200 fps out of the 4" barrel.

I had an older 3" model and while it handled the full power loads really well I wasn't too thrilled with accuracy so I traded it off and later got a S&W 632 that left me wanting as well.
With the 4-5/8" Single Seven the velocity increased about 200 fps over the 3" SP101 with the Speer 115 grain GDHP load and accuracy, as far as I've tested close range, is much improved.
Brian Pearce wrote about finicky loads in the current Handloader mag and I'm still working on my own loads; not yet satisfied with my 327 Fed results to date... which is opposite with the 32 H&R mag. The 32 HRM has liked nearly everything I put together from light 22 LR level loads with 231 to full-tilt 100 grain XTP's over a healthy dose of 296.
