I should have included this, but frankly just forgot: Ruger finally changed to what we have been doing for years - an extended magazine release. It is too short but a huge improvement over the thumb buster push button.
I also like the 15 round magazine. I have never liked the 25 rounders because they are too long and get in the way. This one does not. Though since I have a LOT of 10 rounders that also work perfectly well I doubt I will stock up on them

A (very) short update:
I FINALLY made it to the range. Thanks to the gun/ammo/wind (?) it is a total tease! I usually shoot 15-20 different loads on any new rimfire, but quit after 9 today because probably the gusty 10-15mph winds messing with me. I got numerous 2, 3 & 4 shot single holes only to throw a flier or two outside (5 shot groups). I believe it shows promise but unfulfilled today.
Even always reliable ammo like Wolf match target and Midas L & M were throwing them and I'm sure it was the gusty wind, so I just quit. one 5 shot group with Midas L was a single round hole - not even ragged, with a flier a 1/2" out. ~ARGH~. The trigger though is fantastic. Absolutely the best Ruger factory trigger I have ever felt.
I do have a couple of items of note that might be of interest:
1. I had 1 failure to fire that fired on the 2nd try. This is not a gun you can easily slip a loose round in the chamber. I actually gave up and put the single loose round back in the magazine. Not a big deal, but what it is.
2. 3 Stock Ruger 10 round mags all got stuck. They were just too tight and I had to pry them out from the chamber. I am sure this is fixable, but it is an issue.
3. The forearm has a flat bottom, but it is super narrow. This is no benchrest gun... the flat is simply not wide enough and there was a lot of movement.
4. The rear pic rail on the bottom of the stock is useless - to me. I will never add a monopod so I don't need it. What I need is a plate to cover that rail so it has a smooth sliding surface. I have never seen one for sale but am guessing I can make one if need be and I need it!
3 & 4 issues combined for a very unsteady re-cocking. Any centerfire rifle I have ever shot will stay pretty much on target while ejecting/recharging the next round. Not this little puppy. No matter how gentle I was it was pulled way off target - and it likes the ejection to be a little snappy. This resulted in having to completely reset the rifle on every single shot. Tedious at best and accuracy affecting at worst.
It could be written off to the ranges' block/bag set up and I will take my own rest and bags next trip to see if it is better with better rests - I am sure it will be.
Maybe someone else can report more accuracy data soon.

Markbo,
Regarding the forearm, there are several companies making a “slider” intended to go on rail forends such as yours. The intention is to provide exactly what you are missing, a wider forend. The sliders are essentially flat plates set up to attach to a keymod or m-lock forend to give you a wider spot to ride on your rest.
Of course attaching a suitable bipod would work, although shooting from a bipod is quite a bit different from using a rest.
We were allotted two Precision Rimfires at the gun shop where I work. It was very nearly a riot as to who was going to get the last one (I sold both the first day I unboxed them). Things were polite enough, but you could see the “boys” were itching to get their hands on them. I have our next four to arrive already pre-sold!
I was thinking of buying one for myself, but I’ve been reading about the new Tikka T1X rimfire, and I believe I will be picking up one of those instead. It should sell for about the same as the Ruger (we charged $399) and looks to be built to a very high standard. Nevertheless, I was and am quite impressed with the Ruger’s value. For the money, it is quite a nice rifle.

Heck, at those prices I’m thinking some big ol’ zip ties and a piece of 2x4!

Okay, here is how badly I've been tempted by the new Tikka T1x. I work in a gun shop, and our primary wholesale supplier is Davidsons. They've informed me that they do not know if fhey will be getting any of the new .22 Tikka rifles, so I actually pre-ordered one at retail through Whittaker, gasp!
Those of you who know me will testify that my case of the "wants" must be some kind of fierce if I'm willing to pay retail ($419.99, so not bad) AND wait for delivery. With my luck, Davidsons will get these in about the time my back order shows up.
I had to do something though. I want to use the Tikka T1x in our recently proposed Gentlemen's Rimfire Benchrest League. Yes, we are aware G.R.B.L. is probably an unfortunate acronym, and a search is on for a more suitable moniker than the Gerbils.
Our proposed game is a 50 yard benchrest shoot for tightest group, shot with your choice of .22 rifle. No classes or restrictions yet, until we see how things shake out.
The idea is that you pick up your offically issued target (12 bulls, 2 for sighting in, and 10 for possible record) at the beginning of each month, and toss 5 bucks in the kitty. At some point during the month you fire for your best group, either 3 or 5 shots, we have yet to decide. Your witness should be another Gerbil (sigh) who is also shooting his or her record groups.
At the end of the month, we meet at a local pizza parlor, digital calipers in hand, and owner of the best group wins the kitty. The idea is to promote competition and camaraderie, as well as get our aging butts out of doors on a regular basis.
To that end I've been practicing with my CZ 452 and a Tasco 2.5-10x AO, but the equipment race is already on. I've sold four of the new Ruger Precision Rimfires through the shop recently, and two are already being seasoned with high magnification Vortex variable scopes and Harris bipods. Not to mention a certain bullet caster from Kennewick, Washington who has promised to use a Winchester 52C with Unertl scope!
That being the case, it behooved me to upgrade the arrows in my quiver, so the new Tikka will be my hopeful entry. A new scope will accompany it, a Japanese built Clearidge Ultra XP 6-20x40 (these come out of the same factory where Weavers and high end Bushnells are built). Iffen you can't beat 'em, join 'em!

Fwiw I put a 6-24x Bushnell on mine. If I had a 10-30x I would have mounted that. ETA: Tony I ordered that front slide and a picatinny rail. Just took a magpul plastic rail cover to the power sander and flattened out a bit for the rear rail. Will update once installed & shot again.

Tony FYI tbat block helped a lot on the bench. Mostly just keeping it steady during working the bolt. 2nd trip to the range accuracy is improving with some break in.
This is no Anschutz or even CZ beater but it is a fine little bolt gun. I am very happy with it.

The T1X is still not in the country, but Beretta was having a sale on Tikka accessories and I picked up the flat bottomed beavertail forend insert, along with the vertical target grip insert (Tikka stocks are modular). I am READY!
I also found a NOS Nikko-Stirling Nighteater 4-16x50. This is one of the discontinued line they built with high grade Japanese glass and ended up pricing themselves out of the market because of yen fluctuation. It has a 30mm tube, side parallax adjustment knob, mil-dot reticle, target w&e knobs, and a sunshade. It was the very last one in the country apparently, and I located it at SWFA. They were closing it out, so I managed to pick it up for less than half of msrp.
I have high hopes for it, but now I realize I need high 30mm scope rings to fit an 11mm dovetail. Been shopping for those, and I’m torn between BKL or Morr Accuracy. I had hoped to use Burris Signature rings with the polymer inserts, but they do not make a ring that is 30mm and fits the 11mm dovetail.
I could install an 11mm to picatinny rail adapter, and then use Burris rings, but I’m not too crazy about that idea. To many variables introduced that could result in the rail being canted side to side or fore and aft. So plain rings it is!
Is it embarrassing to admit that I’m dreaming about this stuff, lol!

Forgot to mention that I bought a case of CCI Standard Velocity .22LR. It isn’t SK, or Lapua, or even Green Tag, but it has a very decent reputation.
I have a rim thickness gauge, plus a very accurate digital scale, and I don’t mind sorting ammo, so Standard Velocity thus sorted brings it closer to Green Tag territory for 1/2 the price. And yeah, that means I work cheap........

I'm a fan of CCI SV. In my experience it is very good ammo. While I am an accuracy nut, I simply cannot force myself to buy $10-$12/box .22 ammo. I'm nit a competitive shooter so thete is no point really.
If I can hit & kill a squirrel or cottontail with it, I qm perfectly happy. Plus I have had great luck with Paco's tools making HPs
