...before it becomes impractical? I have a Rossi M68 that has become my 'bench-gun,' the gun I play with and experiment on, and decided to find out just how small I could make it without compromising function. I cut down and modified the grips and frame, shortened the barrel to 1-3/4", bobbed the hammer and serrated the top so that it can theoretically still be thumb-cocked. I had to shorten the ejector to match the barrel, and I relieved the trigger guard at the front on either side to allow faster access to the trigger. I still haven't mounted a front sight, but I took the gun with me to the range just to function-check it. Everything works as it should, and even though I was just pointing and blazing away all the rounds were on the paper at five yards- I expect the accuracy will be reasonable once there is a front sight again. The handle shape makes the gun point quite naturally, and there is enough there to manage the recoil of standard-pressure rounds. I think I've taken this one as far as I care to go. I'll make a new grip, install a front sight, refinish it and call it good. Time for e new bench gun, I think.

The J Frame Smith & Wesson has the serial number on the bottom of the gripframe. It would probably be in the way.

Am intrigued by your grip shape. Shades of Fuzzy Farrant grips.

Cut that trigger guard out ala Fitz... then you are done. I second that!!! Go for the Fitz. Can you post a pic of it without the wood on the grips, please? I'd like to see what you did there. Awesome bit of tinkering! -K

The picture above made me think of a way to make the grip smaller- so I popped out into the shop and did it. I cut off the bottom of the grip and silver-soldered the original bottom of the grip-frame in place. I modified the main-spring system a little as the shorter frame required, then cut down some grips I had made for another project just as a 'proof-of-concept.' The grip is surprisingly hand-filling, and I think it will work out well.
