Good morning all,
I've been experimenting with my Marlin CB 45-70. One such experiment has lead me to trying 15gr of Unique under a 300gr Buffalo #3 from Missouri Bullet Company with a tissue filler and a large rifle primer. I read of this load somewhere on another forum a few months back.
I realize that this is not the most practical combination. The purpose of underloading this cartridge is to give my wife something to shoot out of the only rifle she seems to love. I call that a victory, so I do not ask further questions.
The cartridge is pleasant to shoot and is very accurate within reason, (no farther than 100 yards.) However, I do not have a chronograph and I've yet to use this recipe in the field, nor do I have enough experience with loads not in the manual to know if this is safe to shoot at medium size game. I'd like your opinions on whether or not it is responsible to attempt taking whitetail with it so that my wife has something to use. DISCLAIMER: I understand that there are better options out there for her as far as rifles and cartridges are concerned, but this is what she wants to use, and I am just glad to have her interested in the first place, as I am sure some of you can understand. Thanks in advance for your contribution.

There is information on Hodgdon's Website, and also in the Speer Manual, for reduced loads. Pm sent.

Quickloads puts that load at just north of 1100 fps with a 300 grain cast bullet. It would be fine for deer to 100 yards. Even a little further if she is comfortable with it. I think you'll be surprised at how well that combination works on whitetails.
You might consider Trailboss as a powder choice. It's tailor made for a situation such as this and you don't have to fool around with fillers. Should give you a similar velocity.
If that's the gun she likes and it will keep her interested in shooting and hunting and gives you two time together in the field and on the range, then I'd say it's the perfect rifle for her.

I have a Unique load I load for my wife in her Compact 308. 16 gr of Unique pushing a half jacket 30 Carbine 100 gr bullet. She loves shooting them. Her little rifle doesn't really Kick per say. Compared to say my 9.3×64 or 458. But it does hop around kinda lively. Enough she doesn't like to just blast away with full power 308 ammo. The Unique/100 gr bullet load is going around 1600 fps and works great on squirrels. Doesn't really feed very well so I'm going to try some 125 gr varmint bullets with 15 gr of Unique.

HE SHOT IT SO MUCH HE HAD TO REPLACE THE BARREL AFTER 30,000 ROUNDS AS IT BURNED A RING IN HIS BARREL AT THE END OF THE CASE MOUTH.

I was going to suggest to Ben he do a search as Paco most likely has his 45-70s loads written up not only in his books but the net as well.

Are you citing the burning of his barrel to express the load's popularity, or are you cautioning on it's use because of what it did to your friend's rifle?

Unique was very popular back when few other powders were available. Lyman no longer includes Unique loads in their .45-70 data.Don't worry until you hit 29,000 rounds

FWTW, I run 12grs and a 350 cast in my 13" Contender. Makes a dandy deer slayer.

If a Marlin action will last 30,000 rounds I guess the barrel has a right to burn out. I bet that is a slick cycling rifle!

Years ago an older retired school teacher friend of mine and I got our hands on the Paul Matthews book, Forty Years With the 45-70. That turned into a full summer of cast bullets and Unique on his back yard 70 yrd range. I played around from 5-10 gr loads and 535gr Postels, at 800 fps they clover leafed 3 shots at 50 yds from a 28" Shiloh Business rifle. My old friend used his Ruger #3 and a load similar to the one at the top of the page. I don't remember his exact bullet, but he did most of it at 15 gr and it was close to 1400 fps. I think you could load lighter to start her out, there is no sense in shaking her up if you want her to enjoy it. About a year ago, I loaded 100 rds of 45-70 for a friend who wanted to familiarize his wife with his Marlin levergun. She often ends up alone with nothing bigger than a .22, at home and at camp. I sent him home with LEE 405 FP over Trailboss at 800 fps, they both shot them up together and have continued to use the same load.
