So I'm lookin for the right deal on a model 83 454. In so doing I sure see a lot of Magnaported guns. I have a 4" Redhawk 454 Magnaported and I like the result in the the short barreled gun. What's with all the magnaported FA's? Some of them have the oval ports on the side of the barrel as well. How many of you guys have a 6, 7.5" 83 454 that is magnaported? Likes, dislikes?

Both of my 7.5s are ported. The 5.5 and 5 are not. The 97 is not.

My 6" FA83 in 454/45 Colt/45 acp is ported with the four hole pattern. It really helps with muzzle flip.

People buy them, they kick to much for them.
They have them magna ported, they still kick too much.
They sell them.

I used to see folks talk about the noise which I find amusing. The blast of a 454 regardless of ports is severe. With cylinder gap blast etc, I just don’t see that being an issue to not buy one personally. I have 44s with ports and can’t tell difference in noise but can feel difference in recoil “flip”

I have a 7.5" that is ported with the MNP 4 port. I also have one that is not, and I don't notice a lot of difference in the recoil between them. I bought one of those guns already ported, and sure would not pay to have one done. You can use the MNP as a negotiation factor to sometimes get a better price.
I don't like the ported gun for lead bullets as it gets messy to clean the deposits on the sights. One time I tried a fiber optic sight on the ported gun....for ONE shot. The blast blew the light pipe out of the sight blade.

My first “big bore” (larger than .45 cal) was a 6” Freedom Arms M757 .475 Linebaugh that had been magnaported (two ports). The gun was used and I got it for a good price. The porting never bothered me. Several years later, I ended up with another 6” Freedom Arms .475 LB – exactly the same configuration, but not ported. Muzzle flip with the ported gun was a bit less noticeable.
Muzzle blast of the ported .475 Linebaugh was less than that of an unported 4” S&W 329 loaded with 250s and 2400. Not just my opinion, but verified by others on several different occasions.
I know there are real ported gun “haters” out there, but I’d never let porting stop me from taking advantage of a good deal.
If I shot my 329 as much as in the past, I’d have it magnaported with 4 ports.
FWIW,
Paul

I think a lot of it depends on your use of the gun. If I was looking for stand alone brown bear protection , running full house ammo. I would want a FA ported or better yet with a full muzzle brake. Say a 6" with an integral expansion chamber and 2 verticle slots per side with 2 good size holes on top. Rifleing stopping at 4 5/8" Having a pissed off brown bear jump up 15 feet away and head your way quickly makes quick multiple shots fairly necessary. A good brake can help with that.

It was years ago, but I got a great deal on mine- 6" Mod 83, Magnaported (two-port), .454, w/extra .45 Colt cylinder. It was like-new in box on consignment for about half what they went for new at the time. I'd be surprised if it had had more than a box of ammo through it. Was told the guy took it to the range once, and wanted nothing more to do with it...

So it sounds like you guys that have the ported FA's have no complaints and that if a guy finds a nice one that is ported it shouldn't be a deal breaker.

If mine , a 7 1/2" had been ported or muzzle broke , I'm sure I would still have it.

Yep, both of mine were ported after I bought them. Now if I bought another, I probably wouldn't. Just don't shoot hot loads anymore.

My experience has been that the blast from the muzzle brake adds just as much "recoil sensitivity" from noise and blast as it takes away from recoil impact. All in all a net nuttin in terms of perceived recoil. Just m of course, your perception may be completely different. If you want a real "fun" experience try a 4 inch 454 with ports from a bench with a tin awning. Now that is some serious concussion.

I've had 2 guns magnported and did it for muzzle flip, not recoil reduction. One pistol and one rifle. Works great. I know what you mean about 4" magnaported gun under a tin awning. My 4" 454 Redhawk is magnaported. But I don't like to shoot any my pistols under the roof. Including my non-ported 500L.

Exactly...I bought a pre-owned with the 4 port and I have no issues with it, but mine is scoped. I wouldn't want my fiber optic vaporized if that's the planned sight system. I shoot nothing without hearing protection, so ports/no ports is a mute issue with me. Most ported guns I see, seem to be cheaper because of people having issues with the ports; oh well, that's just a cheaper gun for us that don't have an issue with it.
