I remember reading an article in one of the gun magazines a long time ago (30 years+) about a single action that was converted to shoot the .458 Woods White Horse Magnum. The cartridge is a shortened and necked down .460 Weatherby Magnum. Has anyone had any experience with this round? If so what were your impressions?

It appears you've found one we've not heard of. I do not recall this wrist wrecker. Luck.

I recall reading the article, but that is about all I remember. Too many years ago, but the name was distinctive enough to stick with me.

I remember seeing the article. Thought it was in one of the G&A one off specialty publications.

There were two Whitehorse Magnum cartridges, both designed by Bruce Woods of Sylmar, CA. The first came in 1970 and was called the .457 Whitehorse Magnum. It consisted of a .458 Win Mag cut to 1.785”. Bruce fabricated the entire gun out of 4140 and it weighed 7.5 lbs. The only thing he didn’t manufacture was the 1:14” twist barrel, which came from Apex. Using IMR-4227 powder, the .457 Mag performed as follows: 300 grain Sierra @ 1,763 fps 350 gr Hornady @ 1,650 fps 405 gr Win SP @ 1,510 fps 500 gr Hornady @ 1,255 fps 545 gr cast @ 1,370 fps In 1978, he built a second cylinder in .457 Super Magnum. This was the .460 Weatherby you referenced trimmed to 1.785”. It added approximately 100 fps over the .457 Magnum across all the bullets listed above. I have some literature on the gun. If I get time, I’ll scan and post. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

It was listed in a special edition of G&A I believe called "Magnum Handguns."
I found two copies of it here and sent a copy to a friend.
