Not sure I'm gonna go this route as .44 Special is comparable power wise. But could I shoot .44-40 out of my .44 Magnum SBH if I had a separate cylinder chambered for it? If so, who would you guys recommend?

If a .357 cylinder can be reamed to .357 Bain and Davis, I don't know why it couldn't be reamed to .44-40.

The problem will probably be that even though the NM 357 and 44 are built on the same frame, the 357 cylinder is shorter than the 44 cylinder. I would think the cylinder that might work is a shortened 357Max cylinder or contact Ruger since I believe they made a few 44 mag/44-40 guns in limited numbers. Since it is a combo they have gone in the past they may fit one for you.

Should be no issue adding a 44-40 cylinder to your 44 Magnum Blackhawk.
There have been some factory made dual cylinder guns built through the years.
As far as recommended gunsmiths, any of the custom revolversmiths could build it for you. I do recommend buying bulk brass up front and sending a few to headspace cylinder with.

There is a new model 41 mag cylinder on Gunbroker right now. Might make a good donor cylinder for a 44-40.

I think Reeder typically quotes $250 for a scratch made cylinder fit to your gun.

A long time ago, back in the 70's, I read an article in a gun rag that had someone that re-chambered his SBH 44 Mag cylinder with a 44-40 reamer. The article said it worked fine and shot well. You need to check the case dimensions to see if it cleans up properly. That scenario would let you shoot 0.429" bullets.

A long time ago, back in the 70's, I read an article in a gun rag that had someone that re-chambered his SBH 44 Mag cylinder with a 44-40 reamer. The article said it worked fine and shot well. You need to check the case dimensions to see if it cleans up properly. That scenario would let you shoot 0.429" bullets. And that’s precisely why some gun rags should be used for outhouse paper, no offense meant to the poster I just quoted is meant either but that won’t work very well. The Magnum is a straight wall cartridge and has a case diameter of .457. The grand old .44WCF is a bottle neck that measures about .434 at the neck. Could it be done, YES! But every shot would expand the neck to fit chamber causing excessive sizing and rapid failure of the already paper thin WCF cases |
