I have an interesting .38 Spl Colt DA. I bought it believing it was a non factory Fitzed Detective Special. Had it 10 - 15 years before I wondered when it was made. Went to reference books and it was to early a serial number for DS. So I lettered it and it was shipped in 1915 as .32-20 four inch Police Positive Special. The first DSs were 2 inch barrel PPSs. Interestingly, the barrel address on right side is wrong for DS, but correct for PPS. The left side has usual 38 Detective Special mark. And the cylinder face has a five point star stamped in it. anyone know if the star is a factory rework mark? It also has a large "E" stamped below the serial number on the frame. If the star is a factory rework mark, any chance Colt has record of the later rework? Thanks for any answers. Jayhawker Bob

5 pointed star on the front cylinder face of a pre-ww2 New Service or SAA is said to indicate a "high pressure" rated cylinder. Usually found on .38-44, .357, and .44 special cylinders (it's possible that these .44 Special cylinders were rechambered from .38 or .357).
The colt "re-work" marking is said to be an ampersand (&) stamped usually on the front trigger guard boss near the VP (Colt's smokeless proof marking).
A true factory "fitz" should have the VP (which is usually stamped on the front trigger guard boss) stamped inside the crane recess of the frame and only visible with the crane open.
