been really contemplating a Spencer reproduction rifle in 56-50... Starline is making new centerfire brass... I just ordered up 50, & all the stuff needed to load them... ( actually bought an RCBS hand prime tool, as I prefer the hand prime tools, & made the investment in Lee hand primers decades ago... the RCBS uses standard shell holders, so it works for odd ball stuff, that Lee doesn't make hand prime shell holders for )... so I'm committed to this cartridge... I can easily use smaller 50-70 bullets that I currently have & load for... the more I look at this, the more I see 500 Special... since this is an antique cartridge, I don't see any issues that it's the 50 cal rifle bore size... anyone see any reason why this couldn't be chambered in a revolver, as a companion gun for the Spencer rifle... thinking the frame window would need to be opened up so the cylinder diameter could be made big enough for these rimmed cases... length should fit any standard length cylinder... any thoughts???

At first, I thought this was dumb, but then I google'd case dimensions and, turns out, this case should fit nicely!
56-50 Starline Brass 500 Linebaugh
1.1500 --- length --- 1.405 .5585 --- base ----- .553 .6125 --- rim ----- .610
(All numbers stolen from the googles) If there's such a thing as a sloppy 500L chamber, if might fit! But more importantly, it looks like it should be possible.
What a cool idea! I want it styled as period correct as possible!

you could probably even run them through the 500 Linebaugh sizer die to make them fit as a special in the Linebaugh guns... I honestly didn't realize they were that close... maybe the easiest is just to buy a Linebaugh gun???
as you mentioned as period correct, I think a stainless Montado / Vaquero if there was room to do a 5 shot???

I was thinking more old school. 1865 is pre-SAA, so 1860 Army?
What about a fixed-sight Ruger Old Army conversion?

Not enough real estate with a mid-frame or 1860. Would have to be a large frame. You can squeeze a shortened JRH into the mid-frame but that's it.

This is what I was thinking... Or maybe a Remington 1858?

I say go period correct and see what's possible. Very curious to see the end result.

I talked to Hamiton Bowen about this once upon a time...building a British Bulldog out of a Redhawk.
Do-able, but crazy expensice...

I remember an article in a magazine years ago about big bored RH's. Hamilton Bowen versions included. Recall .50 cal versions. Versions ran fron packable field defense to hunting. If I have, can find, will post.

Looking at some Ruger Old Army model revolvers, & the frame looks heavy enough to allow the trimming needed for a bigger cylinder to fit the 56-50's... not sure if there is enough meat on the bones of a 58 Remington to get a cylinder big enough... but still looking
