I have both. I like the S&W a little better. My only complaint with the S&W is the polished stainless finish. This reflects a lot of light with the sun on your back. If this revolver were a dull black it would certainly be a fine Kit Gun. The SP101 is a frosted finish and this is better for an outdoor gun. The J-frame Sith will handle quite as hot loads as the K-frame but it handles a good variety of handloads and shoots the 115-grain handloads very well. I would be nice if the S&W had a black blade sight The Red ramp front sight is not the best for my eyes in bright sunlight. I do not care for the green plastic sight on the SP101 and I am considering onwhat to do about it.

As the old saying goes: “Now this is a Kit Gun. This is the 3-inch full lug .38 Spl Terry Murbach dubed the Trail Masterpiece. If this were a .32 Magnum or .327 Federal this would be a fine Kit Gun – its not bad as it is.

I've got one. I traded for it almost 20 years ago when looking for a Ruger Bisley .32 because Ross Seyfried influenced me again. I went to an old gun store and they had a 6" full underlug Smith .32 or this one, I now wish I had both. I traded for this one and pretty much burned myself in the trade but with the prices they are getting now, I'm feeling a little better about it these days. He had a price tag of $400 on it when I traded. It is an awesome little gun but admittedly I haven't shot it much, I plan to change that soon though because I have a few other .32"s now and a ton of reloading stuff. I love the 4" J frames and wish Smith would make a few more, I would like one in .38 special but apparently they have never made a 4" .38 J frame. You will be happy you got it. It's a lot of power in such a tiny gun and the 4" barrel is just awesome. I wish I could remember the details, and model, but I'm positive that I saw a 4" J-frame .38 a couple years ago at a local shop... As for the 631, my 4" came from a local Gander Mountain almost ten years ago. They had it tagged (and priced) as a Model 63. As high as their prices were on so many things, I made up for it on this little find.

Another REALLY nice one is the 60-18 which is a J-frame .357 kit gun with a 5" barrel. I found them on sale about 5 years ago or so and bought 2 for the price they had them for. Like a dummy I sold them and wish I had one back... Gunblast did a review: www.gunblast.com/SW60_KitGun.htm
