So I've got this old Winchester Model 64 30wcf. Made somewhere around 1943-48. It's gummed up, needed a teardown and scrub down. So I broke out the tools and Hoppes and got after it. Well, my bench is in the basement and we have forced air heat. Since it's winter the furnace kicked on and filled the house with the wonderful smell of my youth. It's a favorite along with the smell of a wet chesapeake, dead mallards, shotgun powder and grampas thermos of coffee. Well, the wifey came home and the first thing I heard was....."THE WHOLE HOUSE STINKS LIKE GUN OIL..". Whoops... I broke out the air freshener and all is well now. Personally I think they could bottle Hoppes and sell it as cologne....hmmm

Miss Penny caught me YEARS ago cleaning my guns in my gun room. She said; "What's that smell?" When I replied "Hoppe's #9" she told me to clean the guns in the living room. She will now clean guns FOR ME,,, if I tear them down. She loves the smell. Kinda helped make her a keeper.

Still got time to get it out for Christmas sales. A boxed set of Hoppes Cologne and a jar of Cosmoline Hand Crèam.

Well, the wifey came home and the first thing I heard was....."THE WHOLE HOUSE STINKS LIKE GUN OIL..". Two of my standby lines are "I fail to see the problem" or "You say that like it's a bad thing". I tend to collect dirty looks and eye rolls. One person's stink is another person's rose...

Well, you can't kill anything with that old cartridge so when you're finished cleaning please send to me. Or I'll send you some cast 200 grain bullets that you can drive at almost 2200 with sane pressures. It's still an impressive killer in the field.

I actually have some Hoppes #9 car air fresheners. Little card board bottle shaped hangers.

Actually I'm planning on letting it go. Like to hear more about the rifle... What do you want to know? It's a 24" Model 64 30 wcf with a Redfield peep sight. Looks good for it's age, like an ol' hunting rifle. Some bluing wear, bright sharp bore. Wood is good, no cracks, a little finish worn off the stock. It lived most of it's life in the deer woods of Pennsylvania. My Step Moms Fathers deer gun. I never met the man.

My wife, too, likes the smell of the old Hoppes #9. It reminds her of her dad who we lost about 25 years back. Tim

That smell makes me smile.
So much has changed but thank goodness the tree huggers haven't made Hoppes change that yet...

I shot a muzzleloader the other day and brought it home before I gave it a thorough cleaning. My 10 year old daughter came home from school while I was still cleaning it. I am pretty sure her exact words were," The house smells like bad poop."

I don't know about the Hoppes #9 cologne... may attract a few ladies, but mostly scruffy old guys... I've got a rifle very similar to the OP... was my FIL's... while I've not shot it yet ( it has lots of company ) I can leave it in the gun room for an occasional trip to the range, without hurting anything... it's not one I'd have any reason to part with, since I had never bought a 30-30... so, it still fills a nitch
