In 1974 or 5 I somehow snuck around & bought a new Python. My best shooting buddy had a 6" K38. We spent the biggest part of our spare time shooting 38 wadcutters, thousands of them. The Smith could hang with the snake anytime, we could trade guns, the Smith would still hang.
I don't have a K38, but I stand with reverence when I see one.

This one has absolutely nothing in common with the other and doesn't even come close in any way but it's mine. I bought this on a whim to have a K frame .38Spl and when it came in I kinda just fell in love with it. I hated the trigger and the grips so I had to get them fixed. John Culina made a set of grips out of Osage Orange that this picture does no justice to and that feel perfect in my hand so the grips are all set. I sent the gun down to Frank Glenn who is an undisputed master with Smiths, I simply told him I wanted a good action that would set off any primer but most importantly I wanted him to check everything and fix anything he found wrong. He did an excellent job on it and it's pure pleasure to shoot this gun. I've put this gun in the hands of several folks that were complaining about current S&W revolvers and all I've gotten is wide eyed lust. I love this gun and plan to wear it out. Funny thing, it doesn't kill or even dull my desire for a sweet 6" model 14 with bluing to give you goose bumps. Someday.

Had one or two back in the PPC era. Never could afford one of those full blown bull barrel Aristocrat rib wad cutter guns, but I did enjoy shooting my K 38 and helping to pay for the trophies of the guys who had the custom rigs.
Then I discovered Smith 44s and the K 38 went away for a 29-2 4" and I haven't looked back until a few months ago when I had the chance to purchase a very well maintained Colt's Officer Model Match in 38 Special.
Love the OMM but will always have a fondness in my heart for the K 38, Model 14-2.

You've landed on one of my favorites in that model 15 Combat Magnum. I have spent more time with my Model 14 Target Masterpiece because it has such a nice 8 3/8" barrel. I still have a very difficult time telling them apart.
They both are as accurate as any shooter I've got.
I think the K frame is the foundation of some of the best DA shooters ever made. 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19. And if you like the stainless, the 60 series are all outstanding as well. An oddity for me, I have all the blued models, but none of the stainless. Go figure?
Do they make the 60 series with the 8 3/8" barrel?

Don’t know if any 64’s or 67’s ever got an 8-3/8” barrel but all they make today are 4”.

Mine resides on the door to my handgun safe. I shot it a lot years back in PPC.
I shot a heavy barreled PPC revolver the most, but used the Model 14 for the Distinguished Revolver match occasionally. I haven't fired it in too many years. It was converted to DA only, the hammer was bobbed, and the trigger pull is smooth as I could ever want.

My Wannabe is focused to a slightly different tune . Not so much for range and targets but more as a nearly indestructible trail/hiking/packing gun .Stainless, Micarta and a light taper barrel. Not the biggest ,baddest around but easy to feed and perfect for bunnies and cans and such. Model 67-1.

This K-38 had the single action only kit installed by previous owner. I sent it back to S&W to make it the way it was when it left the factory...The S&W gunsmith returned the SAO parts in a plastic bag.....

Dan Hey Dan , the stocks are Micarta(oops the ad says G-10) from VZ grips. Internal inletting is impressive and fit is perfection. A little thinner in front and back but it helps them to stay out of the way when hanging on a belt and they do feel good in the hand. Still working on softening the points of the checkering as it is quite aggressive out of the box. This is them . vzgrips.com/pistol-grips/smith-wesson/k-l-frame/square-bottoms/k-frame-sq-tactical-diamondsBut the smooth looks good too. vzgrips.com/pistol-grips/smith-wesson/k-l-frame/square-bottoms/320s

Dean Grennell wrote about his favorite K-38 in his Pistol and Revolver digest. The stories were good reading.

I would like to know how those VZ grips hold in double action shooting if you don't mind saying.I have heard that the VZ grips are both heavy and have aggressive checkering and some folks just do not like them.I have a model 67 and would like a pair but I would like to know what you think about them.
