I am looking for a set of grips to fit my mid size flat top 45 Colt 45 ACP. IT HAS THE X R-3 grip frame. It has been a long time since I have paid attention to Single Action grip makers. I would welcome any suggestions? Thank you.

Zane of Lone Star Custom Grips is here on the forum and does great work as does Sack Peterson who Is here on the forum. You can also check with Rob Rowen of Rowen Custom Grips or Scott Kolar of SK Grips. A lot depends on who has what material in stock and ready and how much you want to spend.

May I humbly suggest that you do it yourself . Horn is a soft, easy to work with material comparatively and Merino sheep horn is usually available . Not instant gratification but not a forever project either. These are HO-Maid on a ACP gun.

After wiping some drool up, I'll say you need not be so humble. Wow.

If one has never made a pair of plow handle style grips before, I would not suggest trying your first pair with something like rams horn. Moreno sheep horn is not that easy to get in a pair of scales that are large enough for plow handle style grips. I wouldn't waste it on the first try.
If you do manage to get a set of scales large enough for grips, I would suggest making a couple pairs of grips out of wood first. I'm not saying a first time grip maker can't turn out a good pair of grips but a lot of them turn out a not so good pair. I wouldn't like to see sheep horn wasted on a not so good pair.
Needsmostuff, those are nice looking grips. Are they the first pair you ever made?

On the topic, how slick are the grips?? They appear to be very, which to me would not be desireable in a heavy recoiling gun. I do like the looks, and have some bighorn coming, but am concerned about gun movement.
slicker than micarta??

Thank you for all the advice and information. I do not think I would try to make my first ever set of grips using sheep horn. I think maybe I would consider trying some short scrap 2x4 fro HD for the first 1, 2 or 10 tries. One thing I forgot to ask was if sheep horn is okay for slimmer "gunfighter" style grips? I am looking into a set of Merino horn grips from Zane. Thanks again for sharing the wisdom.

well it kind of depends on how much they're sanded and polished. if they're sanded out to say 320 to 600 grit then they don't feel much different than Micarta. the only down side is the flat/satin look doesn't show the grain as well as a polished set. if a set is sanded to 3000 grit and then polished then they will look great but they'll be a little slick.
also like stag, Rams horn can finish out with some Bark on them which can help when gripping the revolver.
if you want to see what it feels like I've got two Rugers with Rams horn on them.

I've done several slim 1911 sets a few single action sets that were at or just above gunfighter thickness and they finished out just fine.
